First time I've had one for kids room. I've done the scan and it finds all the BBC channels but no ITV, Channel 4 etc. Is it just that I'm in a bad reception area??
Sometimes i can only get BBC on mine the itv channels and the channel 4 channels (more4 e4 etc) i get but sometimes they're really bad reception. Sometimes if you reset the box it works better, hold the power button in on the front of the box for about 10 seconds then let it load up again or whatever, usually works with mine.
RE: Sometimes i can only get BBC on mine The aerial is on the roof, I tried re-scanning with a signal booster plugged in but it still made no difference.
Almost certainly poor reception With digital TV, channels are delivered in huge MPEG streams called multiplexes. Whereas with the .mpg video files you get on your PC there is one video and one audio substream, each stream for digital TV contains numerous of each. There are 6 multiplexes broadcast, which are then divided up into audio and video substream pairs by your Freeview to create the individual channels. Your box must be missing a multiplex, or maybe even two. If it has a manual tuning mode, the frequencies are here. Click on the name (eg SDN, BBC etc) at the end of each to see which channels each one holds then match up with which channels you're missing to see which streams you're short of. Then try tuning the frequency manually. If it still doesn't pick up, reception is probably too poor. Digital stations currently broadcast with a pretty weak signal as strengthening it would cause interference on analogue. After analogue is switched off, we can expect quite a boost and pretty much everyone will be able to receive it. Before then you may need a new aerial.
Disconnect the aerial, run the scan fully, reconnect the aerial and scan again. That sometimes works. Most boxes are set to increase the input amplication stage if a poor or no signal is recieved. Also, if the run from the aerial is long the signal can be attenuated so much that there's no reception. You may need an aerial amplifier if you havn't got one already.
