<div class="walltext">Hysteria - The New Sanity First we have a global financial meltdown substantially caused by mass hysteria, and now we have the Morgan Hume hysteria. My observations are: 1. Awful injury for Hume and one's heart goes out to him. I hope he makes a rapid recovery. 2. I was at the game and the challenge gave rise to no more partisan barracking from fans than any 'normal' challenge that leads to a yellow card. In addition the players did not make a massive deal of it and nor did the fans on walking out of Oakwell. The main talking point was the penalty (which I thought lucky). 3. No match report in a paper or TV/radio coverage that I read or saw/heard made special reference to the challenge. The challenge was not even shown on the Champ. 4. It thus seems reasonable to suppose that the mass hysteria has erupted therefore as a result of the consequences (ie the fractured skull) rather than the challenge itself. </div><div class="walltext"></div><div class="walltext">5. I have looked at the challenge repeatedly and it does look like Morgan is bracing his arm, bent inwards, to fend off (at least) or hit (at worst) Iain Hume. It's definitely a foul but the injury was far worse than the level of violence of the foul. I suspect that Hume's momentum ansd Morgan's arm movement, with contact in precisely the 'right' place has caused the severity of the injury. 6. Similar challenges happen many times a game, every game, without incident. Iain Hume was very very unlucky on this occasion, but football is a contact sport and fouls and injuries do happen. 7. If Hume's injury had not been so publicly flaunted by Barnsley, no extra action would be taken in my opinion. It would be wrong for Morgan to get punished because of this hysteria, or of the consequences of what was a foul compounded by a ghastly accident of contact.</div><div class="walltext"></div><div class="walltext">8. Barnsley's medical care must be called into question - the player was allowed to go home I gather. 9. SUFC have shown great dignity, in contrast with the mass hysteria whipped up by Barnsley, who seem more interested in compensation than in the health of their player, or in the life of a former captain of their own club and resident of their own town. 10. Unless banned, Chris should play on Saturday. He should hold his head high - yes it was a foul but no worse than any centre half commits 10 times a match. </div>
It's a good point though, it should be Ian Hume and if necessary Barnsley FC's decision, not one 'made' by a bulletin board - no matter how well intentioned and/or correct.
This is most likely because he was in the AWAY stand and so would not hear the barnsley fans. I left with the barnsley fans and a LOT were commenting saying how did morgan stay on the pitch. Also it is all that was talked about at half time in the barnsley stands. This sheffield united fan admits it was a red card then as he admits that the arm was raised and braced to connect with iain Hume. red card. Players are NOT elbowed in the head/face many times in every game. That statement is a complete lie. 1. Of course no action would be taken, because the FA wouldn't know about it. This is exactly WHY barnsley are doing the right thing in drawing their attention to the assault. 2. He states it was an 'accident of contact' which contradicts his earlier statement in which he says, and i quote "Morgan is bracing his arm, bent inwards, to fend off (at least) or hit (at worst) Iain Hume" . I would not disagree with this statement as on a number of occasions in recently there have been instances where the medical team have risked further injury to players/risked their health by underestimating injuries but I would also like to stress that any medical care he recieved or did not recieve occured AFTER the assault and so does not alter the severity of what morgan did. Sheffield United have refused to take any responsibility for the actions of THEIRR player which is not acting with dignity. so presumably between the two sheffield united centre halfs and the two barnsley ones there were FORTY elbows to players heads in saturdays game? This statement is a complete fabrication.
ive never been to a game (except liverpool 98).... when two decisions were talked about with such passion during and after indeed days and definately weeks, months after the game. So for the post to say there wasn't a reaction from the crowd is incredible. Facking blunts
