AFC Barnsley Football Club have announced today (March 22, 2006) its intention to withdraw from the Central Midlands League with immediate effect. AFC Barnsley was established three seasons ago as a football team to represent the town should Barnsley Football Club's ongoing financial problems become terminal. It is clear now that the future of Barnsley Football Club is secure and therefore the central purpose of AFC Barnsley no longer exists. Mark Hancock, manager of AFC Barnsley, said: "It is extremely disappointing for everybody connected with the Club for it to be disbanded after a successful three years. "While ever there was the remotest possibility of Barnsley FC folding it made sense to have an alternative team waiting in the wings but that is no longer the case. "Over the last few weeks we have been allowing players to move onto other sides because we intended to withdraw from the Central Midlands League at the end of the season. We had also stopped recruiting players for the same reason. "Today we have decided that it made sense to withdraw from the league with immediate effect. This allows other teams in our league to recognise that the promotion place we had looked like achieving is still up for grabs. I would like to thank all our players and fans for their support over the last three years. AFC Barnsley have advised the Central Midlands League of their intention and paid all dues to the league to facilitate their release.
