OAKWELL TO GO 'SMOKE FREE' FROM 2007/2008!!!

THE Football League has announced the introduction of a 'smoke free' policy, to take effect from the beginning of the 2007/08 season.

This new policy anticipates and exceeds expected government legislation in this area.Consequently, smoking will not be permitted throughout stadium confines from July 2007 onwards.

This move follows an initiative taken by Championship clubs, thereafter The League held lengthy consultations with all clubs.The new policy also takes into account views expressed by more than 43,000 fans in The Football League Supporters' Survey 2006.

Almost 80 per cent of fans participating in the survey advocated the introduction of some form of 'smoke free' policy at matches, with half of all fans wanting an outright ban.

In announcing The League's new 'smoke free' policy Chairman Lord Mawhinney said: "In re-branding The Football League we made a serious, long-term commitment to encouraging a new generation of supporters to our matches. This is the latest stage in that process.

"We aim to get more families and more young fans going along to watch their local Football League club.This new policy will ensure that doing so does not have a negative effect on their health."

Barnsley Football Club arte delighted to back the Football League's policy and confirm that Oakwell Stadium will be a 'Smoke Free' venue from the start of the 2007/2008 campaign.

non smoker i am happy with it. But think of how much lower our crowds are going to go down now. I doubt people stay away because of people smoking. But taking away that option will stop people coming anymore. Especially considering the crap served up to them makes fans want to smoke more.

i disagree with you.</p>

if the attendance falls because smokers dont come, then so be it. i would rather them stay away that let them put me at risk from getting cancer etc...</p>

that may be a bit extreme like, but its the way i feel.</p>

if they cant manage a match without smoking its touch luck aint it.</p>

Brilliant news.
Although i was reminiscing the other day when I had some particular tab smoke blown my way (prob woodbines).
Brought back memories of standing up in the west stand lower terrace and walking round to the other side of the ground at half-time. Hoping Mick Butler would knock another one in.

 

If its smoke free than they wouldnt need any fans..
