D’Urso is believed to have told Morgan he did not think the foul was deliberate, otherwise he would have been sent off.

Sportsmail also understands the defender phoned the hospital to check on his opponent’s condition, having inquired both at half-time and full-time on Saturday and been reassured by Hume and his teammate Darren Moore that the injury was not too serious.

Even so, concerns are growing that Hume was allowed to go home after the game. He later began vomiting and was rushed to hospital by his family on Sunday as his condition deteriorated.

Scans revealed the extent of the damage and the decision to operate almost immediately is believed to have averted an even more serious situation.

Barnsley’s club doctor John Harban was with Hume on Monday and although the player was described as ‘groggy’ he was able to speak with Davey when the manager went to see him late in the afternoon.

Don't head injuries generally take a while to develop?
Concussion and stuff can take 4 hours to show symptoms..

Yeah, I imagine when he tried to shut down to sleep Saturday night is when the problems would have become stronger.

Im surprised he wasn't admitted to hospital for 24 hours for observation given the strength of the blow.

    Thats right

it's why the fine people at Barnsley hospital told me that people with an head injury should ALWAYS go to A&E just to be on the safe side so they can be monitored by a trained professional.

It would seem that Hume was 'monitored' for about an hour then sent home from the club

Well he should have gone to hospital and after having a look at him they MIGHT send him home and ask a member of his family to watch him for 24 hours. Sounds like he was lucky to get there in time given what followed. A few more hours and it could have been much worse.

im sure he was, but they presumably thought he was ok to go home. anyone with a head injury of that nature should go to the hospital and be fully checked out.
