No tears for another season without Sheffield United, but who will they blame this time?

Sheffield United are facing their third successive season in the Championship after losing to Burnley in the play-off final. Good.

After two years of parachute money and two failed promotion bids, it is where they belong and even the best lawyers in the country would struggle to argue otherwise.

Wembley woe: Sheffield United fans face up to another season in the Championship.

This is the club who acted like the only victims when they went down because West Ham broke the rules over Carlos Tevez.

It was utter rubbish of course. The game was hard done-by, the Premier League were shamefully soft and everybody lost.

Even if West Ham had been relegated because of their misdemeanours, Sheffield United deserved to go with them because they weren’t good enough.

They have stayed down for the same reason and if they still can‘t get out of the Championship next season with the advantage they have from the Tevez money they won through the courts, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Blackwell, who took charge 15 months ago, fears the club may struggle to make an impact next season.

"I don't know where we go next," he said. "I have got to talk with a few people at the football club and decide what the future holds.

"I won't rush into a decision but I know it will have to be made. A lot of lads will have to leave the club now and the wage structure will have to change.

"We have lost the parachute payments which means a rebuilding job at the club. It might need someone different to do it now."

Blackwell was scarred by his experiences with Leeds United three years ago and will not want his career to suffer in the same way again.

After losing to Watford in the Championship play-off final, Leeds no longer had the benefit of parachute payments (worth around £11m a season for two seasons) and suffered relegation to League One the following season.

Blackwell survived the summer but lasted just a few weeks at the start of the subsequent season.

"I have been here before and I know the ramifications," he said. "To pick clubs up off the floor after this is hard going and if you can't quite do it, there is only one outcome.

"I know what losing in a play-off final means, believe you me, and I might have taken this club as far as it can go.

"Our turnover will drop by around £10m. Anyone who loses £10m will tell you it's a significant downturn.

"If you don't get back in the first two seasons, it becomes very difficult to get back and the statistics show that. Many clubs really struggle after that.

"I believe this club is a lot more stable than Leeds ever was but I have to reflect on my role and whether I feel it might be right now to change it. It might take time to rebuild again."

"It is hard to sit here having taken what I have just taken – again. There is no hiding place. This is the worst feeling ever. It is tough."

The Blades' loss of the parachute payments will be only partially offset by the £20m-plus the club will receive from West Ham as settlement over the Carlos Tevez affair.

Blackwell pointed out: "The Carlos Tevez money is spread over six years. There is a major re-structuring job to be done.

"It took me two years to get back here after what happened at Leeds. I have been in the play-off final three times in the last six years. I think I have done something right and I think I can manage.

"Sometimes these things are taken out of your hands. I am not saying (chairman) Kevin McCabe would consider doing that (sack Blackwell) but my personal pride is hurt. The spoils go to the winner, to the loser there is nothing.

"Whether we deserved more or not, we lost the game. Congratulations to (Burnley manager) Owen Coyle. I am sure they will have a terrific season in the Premier League and I don't mind admitting I will be jealous."

The Blades' last chance disappeared with the dismissal of Jamie Ward for two cautionable offences and they ended an unhappy afternoon with a second dismissal as Lee Hendrie was red carded by referee Mike Dean after the final whistle.

Having questioned the official's appointment last week, Blackwell saw Dean turn down three decent penalty appeals and afterwards found it difficult to bite his tongue.

"If I am Alex Ferguson I can get away with saying what I want to say," said Blackwell. "If I'm Kevin Blackwell, I can't.

"I can live with myself. Other people have to live with their decisions as well."

Burnley's goal came slightly against the run of play and Blackwell recalled: "We started well and Burnley relied on the counter-attack. We dominated possession fairly well but when we did get the chances or had strong penalty appeals we didn't get the decisions that mattered when we needed them. Sometimes that is the difference between winning and losing games.

"The lads gave me everything they have got, I am really proud of them, and we have had a great season but I am jealous of Burnley and I feel flat."

or...'please fell sorry for me, i really want this job...' all he's doing is playing on the sympathies and hoping the blunts fans will still like him...

he should also be taken to task by the FA for those comments above and because of those last week about the ref, but we know it wont happen, however, our club have had to answer a charge relating to the coventry game, how much more does blakhead think he can get away with?????????

If the only way you can win a game...

Is by getting soft penalty decisions, then you don't deserve to win a game. We did it at the start of the season, and didn't deserve to win any.

How many shots did Utd have on target? Can only remember 2 and they were soft.

    Translation

Unless I have a fortune to spend I cant manage

I hope McCabe persuades him to stay and he can take em down like he did with Leeds in similar circumstances

"I've taken this club as far as it can go"

Not as far as he can take them note, but as far as IT (the club) can go!

They may as well just pack in I guess!
