ULL TIME FROM YORK STREET BOSTON UNITED 1 (Clarke 65) BARNSLEY 1 (Wroe 57) NICKY Wroe's fine headed goal was one of the few bright points as the Reds were put through their paces by a strong and hard working Boston United side at York Street this evening. Reds boss Andy Ritchie shuffled his pack for tonight's pre-season clash at Boston United with Michael McIndoe starting his first match in Barnsley colours. Sam Togwell was also in the first eleven with trialist Colin Healy on the bench. Barnsley almost had the ideal start as Brian Howard and McIndoe combined well to free Paul Hayes in the area in the first 20 seconds but the striker's first touch took him away from goal and the ball the safety. The home side took advantage of a flick on by giant striker Richie Ryan on seven minutes but Francis Green could not get his dipping volley on target from distance. Again the Reds clicked well with Howard feeding Tony McParland down the right wing on 12 minutes. The former Celtic youngster drilled a fantastic ball across the face of goal but Hayes could only stretch to prod it wide. Howard finally had the chance to test his shooting boots on 17 minutes after Tommy Wright had been bundled over on the edge of the area. The midfielder drilled the free kick through the wall but former Red Andy Marriott did well to hold the ball at the second attempt. Howard went close again five minutes later as he shot inches over the bar after McParland's corner had been half cleared. Boston's height from set pieces almost paid dividends on 29 minutes as defender Mark Greaves headed wide from Paul Tait's corner. McParland was giving former Doncaster star Tim Ryan the runaround down the right flank and turned the full back all ends up on 36 minutes before shooting high over the top. Howard was again the provider on 42 minutes to send Hayes clear and the striker almost picked out the perfect ball to Tommy Wright but Marriott was quick off his line to make a save. After ringing the changes at half time, the Reds went closest to opening the scoring on 49 minutes as Robbie Williams sent a curling free kick past Marriott and onto the underside of the bar. The ball cannoned down and away to safety with the Boston keeper well beaten. Marc Richards then got in on goal three minutes later as he beat Paul Ellender to the ball and shot but Marriott was well placed to smother his effort. At the other end Joachim shot straight at Colgan after Boston's route one attack caught out Paul Reid under pressure from Ryan. The first goal finally came on 57 minutes as Williams managed to dig a cross out from the byline which caught out Marriott and Nicky Wroe came flying in at the back post to power a header into the roof of the net. The lead lasted all of eight minutes as Boston drew level with a goal that trialist keeper Kyle Letheren will want to forget in a hurry. The ball fell to Jamie Clarke 30 yards from goal and the Pilgrims defender sliced his shot which totally deceived the young Welshman and ended up in the top corner. Joachim almost got in again on 68 minutes as he raced onto a through ball but Neil Austin was in the right place to make an important block. Letheren redeemed himself brilliantly on 71 minutes as he pulled off a fine low save to deny Pilgrims skipper Ellender from point blank range after substitute Anthony Elding had split the Reds defence open with a neat flick. The Welsh U21 international was called into action again on 73 minutes as he saved well from Elding after the striker had turned and shot from the edge of the area. Youngster Michael Coulson could have won it for the Reds on 85 minutes as he rose highest to meet Devaney's corner but could not get enough power onto his header to beat Marriott at his far post.
