I can't remember the last time we played a full season of football since we got promoted with Andy Ritchie. Since then it has been either a positive first half of the season, followed by a post Christmas collapse and skin of the teeth survival OR a terrible first half of the season followed by a post Christmas survival rally. If you play like that, year after year, you deserve to drop eventually. Next issue is that we've had plenty of good players through our numbers, however we never keep hold of them for any decent amount of time OR make any decent money put of them. This is a combination of circumstances that spells death. Any time we cobble anything like a decent side together a transfer window opens up and our bones get picked clean. We had had unreasonable levels of luck - teams going bankrupt save us, results going our way on the last day etc. You can't live like that. We've had a string of really poor managers. As much as Flicker looked awesome last year, he found his level this year, and to be fair he hasn't been our worst in recent times all things considered. We have no money, and without money you need inspired leadership or ridiculous luck. Not having inspired leadership we've had some ridiculous luck. If I was a fan of any other Championship side I would want Barnsley to go down, because we've been a laughing stock for years and we're due. This year I think we're going down bottom. I just hope that they stick by Danny Wilson and give him the resources to give him a reasonable chance of bringing us back up.
Disagree. Every year we've been in the Championship, we've deserved to be in it. We've been in the second tier longer than any other Club, and I don't really care what other Clubs think. We've defied the odds time after time. There's a reason for that.
Technically we didn't a couple of years ago. We were saved by Pompey going into admin. Would've brought the "Rochdale project" to a much quicker end.
well on this I have to disagree Tomfun we stayed up one season of late only down to the fact that Portsmouth got deducted 10 points. People will argue the ins and outs of that, but its a fact. I will concur that results on the last day can be read as going right or wrong for a side , at both ends of a table. BUT its just one game of the entire season. The final table is the result of a whole season and not just that last game. As for the Pompey scenario ,well as I said some may argue the toss on that one, saying they broke rules.. over spent , whatever... but did the manager do this , did the players do this... NO they did not, what did do it was the corrupt world that Football is so rapidly becoming, Its time constrictions were indeed put in place , AND SOON in my view.
Re: well on this I have to disagree Tomfun portsmouth got deducted 10 points, because they broke the rules and spent money they didn't have, to try and stay in the league. they went down, because they didn't deserve to be in the Championship.
keep believing that tommy boy but the facts remain the same ... had they not had that deduction we would have gone... I was not arguing any facts as to the rights and wrongs of what they did... I mean FFS look at the way the Premier league main teams literally BUY the Prem title. Football is rotten.. it needs taking apart and re jigging . Get rid of that fat bastad BLATTER would be a good first step.
Re: keep believing that tommy boy you could equally argue that had they not spent the money they did, they wouldn't have had the squad they had, and would have gone down automatically anyway.
good point , very good point have to admit , I have not looked at that way... but we did still have a shitty season then as we have had for a long while.
Gutted we couldn't keep Butterfield, Vaz Te and Drinkwater together - we were up with the best in the league when we had them.
