Reds idols in link to job
BARNSLEY
By Simon Meeks
WITHIN 30 minutes of Andy Ritchie's sacking, Barnsley had received two applications to take over as manager.
And the list of would-be Oakwell bosses is expected to grow daily with Iain Dowie, Kevin Blackwell, Neil Redfearn and Eric Winstanley understood to be among the serious contenders.
Charlton axed Dowie and Leeds United got rid of Blackwell. Redfearn is still playing at Bradford Park Avenue and Winstanley is youth team coach at York City.
Barnsley owner Patrick Cryne wants a modern manager, who can develop players and utilise the club's academy.
The club aim to appoint as soon as possible.
Academy manager Simon Davey will take first team training tomorrow. He will be in charge for Saturday's home game with Ipswich Town.
Chairman Gordon Shepherd did not rule Davey out of the running to take over permanently.
"Within half an hour of our announcement about Andy we had two applicants," Shepherd explained. "There will be no shortage of applicants. Whether we decide to advertise depends on the strength of those applicants. We had 80 before we appointed Andy.
"Simon Davey is a very, very able coach. We will be interested to see how he does, in a sense that might be his application for the job."
Davey is expected to have West Brom midfielder Ronnie Wallwork available for Saturday. The 29-year-old has been offered a loan deal until January 1.
Said Shepherd: "He is ex-Manchester United, a tough tackling midfielder. Fingers crossed we will have him in for Saturday. He is a player Simon rates highly."
Ritchie said: "I'm disappointed and upset, I intend to issue a statement via the Professional Footballers Association."
Yesterday's club statement criticised Ritchie for not using funding available to strengthen his squad and Cryne accused him of lacking ambition.
The fate of Ritchie's No 2, Rick Holden, is not yet known. He is away on the Isle of Man. The club will contact him on his return tomorrow to tell him if he still has a job.

From PC's Academy Utilisation policy , at least that should rule out Joe Royle.

Much as I was against the sacking of Ritchie , I am looking forward to Saturday.

I expect 3 or 4 changes at least from the Palace debacle.

Wallwork and Togwell in midfield?

interest to see who starts up front and the centre backs. not getting hopes up yet, but I'd be disappointed to see Marc Richards starting.

That midfield would do me,

Howard is looking off the pace at the moment.

Maybe we play 1 up with Howard in behind.

Reid should be on the bench at best , he was hopeless again at Palace. Hassel and Kay centre-half.

Funnily enough

That was exactly what was said by a good many posters when Andy Ritchie was appointed on a full time basis .
