Reds line-up is all settled

    Published Date: 06 August 2008
    By Simon Meeks
BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey has already picked the team he will play at QPR on Saturday.
With two days to go before the Championship campaign starts Davey has made up his mind who is in and who is out.

Although the line-up will not be revealed until match day there will be no place for either midfielder Diego Leon or Hugo Colace.

Leon has missed training with a groin injury and although new summer signing Colace is fit, he has not played enough football to be considered.

Centre back Darren Moore is in line for his debut as is striker Iain Hume and left sided midfielder Mounir El Haimour.

Hume will partner Jon Macken even though Davey is still looking for another striker.

He set up a deal to bring in a centre forward from a Premier League club which failed on Friday and could be revived after the Premier League season kicks off on August 16.

Meanwhile Barnsley general manager Don Rowing has joined the board.

He joins Barry Taylor, Oakwell's only other director, while Patrick Cryne remains owner.

"The articles of our association insist we have two directors," Rowing explained, "the league have been informed that Patrick remains owner.

"It isn't going to make a difference. I have been responsible for the day to day running of the club for the last four years. That won't change."

Barnsley striker Kayode Odejayi has been left out of the Nigerian squad for September games against South Africa and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, former Barnsley winger Kevin Betsy is wanted by Swindon. He is currently at Bristol City.

Team captains will be given extra responsibility in stamping out dissent on the pitch next season, but the new 'Respect' initiative has stopped short of recommending that only skippers could speak to referees during a game.

    Hassell alongside Howard

Foster at right back. Given the injuries, the team picks itself pretty much.

From almost signing Kevin Phillips to begging loan favours from Premiership managers. Duped.

A bit like having to beg someone to let wallwork come on loan

and then being sacked before getting to see him play. Duped.

Derbyshire was a class act before he had that motorbike accident. He's failed to reach the heights he once touched. I wonder if it was him we were trying to sign and the deal collapsed on Friday.

One unproven player and all your budget for the season gone

Bit of a risk isn't it. Oh well, at least puppet boy got funds to sign multiple untested players. Just imagine if the only one he had been given funds for had been odejayi. Down by october.

You've lost me with that post

I'll clarify what I meant. Last summer Davey was given substantial funds to strengthen the side, without any comments from the Chairman about 'significant funds'. The team he built took us to Wembley in the FA Cup Semi Final, and despite key injuries, started to look like a side capable of pushing up the league, massively improved home form albeit disappointing away.

This summer, we've spent less than last, despite the revenue generated from the Cup run. Conversely, a comment has been made in the media about increased backing for the manager, and a target has been set to finish in the top half of the table.

Doesnt seem to add up to me.

    I would imagine

That if the team built last season was so strong as we are led to believe by the manager and our excellent cup run (which in my opinion masked an awful second season) then there wasn't any need for wholesale changes this season and so significant funds were only required for one or two key players.

Those key players we missed out on.

Or you could be right, the term 'box office' does spring to mind. Perhaps now people will start to realise that even back in the andy ritchie days the funds that were talked about simply weren't there. Certainly explains why the official site kept saying we've missed out on this player and that practically every week for three months.

    JCR Hassle Howard El Haimour
    Hume Macken

Subs Letheren Devaney Kosluk Mossto Odejayi

That's cos we were seriously underbidding for players

when we got promoted. £200K offers for Neil Danns, Lee Williamson when they went for 3 and 4 times that amount.

'Box Office' signing promised, talk by PC of signing Chopra when there just wasn't the funds put there.
