"It's been a great season, personally the best I've had," he declared. "You're looking for progression every year, we've got more points than we had last year, we've been to the FA Cup semi-final. Hopefully in 10 days time when we're safe I can go and sit on a beach and say that all the hard work has paid off."

Barnsley are three points clear of Sheffield Wednesday, who currently occupy the final relegation place.

If Barnsley win and Wednes day, Southampton or Leicester lose Barnsley are safe. Wednesday play at Leicester tomorrow.

Howard added: "It's so tight, I think every club is thinking of every scenario but we're in a lucky situation. It's in our hands.

"If we win we're safe and if we get a point and other results go for us we're also safe. So come 5 o'clock as long as we're safe and not going to Cardiff for the last game of the season needing something we'll be happy."

Blackpool, Coventry and Norwich are the other three clubs still in jeopardy with two games remaining

"We've got 52 points, you thought at the start of the season if you had that, you'd be well safe," Howard reflected. "It will be the lowest ever points total to be promoted and the highest ever to be relegated. We don't want to be that team in the record books for that."

Barnsley have lost their last three home games after going months without defeat at Oakwell. Charlton arrive tomorrow with nothing to play for, having missed out on a play-off place.

"We're fully confident we can get the win and stay in the Championship."

Howard stressed. "We've had a blip at home lately but obviously you'd rather be playing at home than away. It's the last home game tomorrow hopefully we'll get a big crowd in, it will be a good atmosphere and we can come away with three points.

"Relegation is obviously at the back of people's minds but you try not to talk about it because people can get nervy and it can effect you but we're fully confident."

Barnsley (probable): Steele, Foster, Nyatanga, Souza, Kozluk, Leon, Hassell, Howard, Devaney, Campbell-Ryce, Macken, Nardiello, Odejayi, Letheren, Ferenczi, Togwell.

Charlton (from): Weaver, Halford, Bougherra, McCarthy, Thatcher, Ambrose, Holland, Zhi, Semedo, Cook, Varney, Gray, Iwelumo, Randolph, Wagstaff, Shevey, Basey.
