BARNSLEY have handed new manager Simon Davey an 18-month contract. He and his No 2 Ryan Kidd have agreed deals tying them to Oakwell until the end of next season. "I'm very pleased, it's a fantastic opportunity at a fantastic club," Davey declared. "We're sure we can do a good job here." Dave Kelly is the club's fitness coach. It is Davey's first job in charge of a club. Fans have criticised the appointment because of his inexperience. "How do you get experience?" Davey responded. "Six weeks in charge here is my experience. There are managers who have had 10 years in the job and still not managed at Championship level. "My qualifications speak for themselves. You are only as good as your results and all I would ask of supporters is to give myself and the staff the chance to prove ourselves." The challenge to Davey is to save the club from relegation. The 36-year-old Welshman added that he was busy in the transfer market and that the bid to bring in Dwayne Mattis from Bury was ongoing. Barnsley bid £25,000 for the 25-year-old midfield player. The offer was rejected. "Talks are going on at boardroom level," Davey explained. He was still waiting to hear from Rotherham United about Barnsley's £200,000 bid for Lee Williamson. "We've heard on radio reports that it has been rejected," Davey said. "At the end of the day the player will decide." Watford are understood to be favourites to land Williamson. "We've got quite a few things on the go at the moment but it is difficult to get players to agree to move and to agree fees with clubs. It is not as easy as people think," Davey said. Barnsley are in FA Cup action tomorrow at Southend United.
Not easy......well good job he is so qualified and experienced then.....and so far I have judged him on results and performances......poor !
I agree, you only as good as your results. Is it just me or isn’t a 3-0 home defeat against Wednesday in what I’m told is the first defeat to them at Oakwell in my lifetime good enough quickly followed by us tamely surrendering at Wolves? Also included were tame defeats against relegation rivals which under Ritchie and using Leon Knight correctly we could have won both as we would have at least had a go at them.
