The 25-year-old described as 'the best midfielder in that division' by Barnsley boss Simon Davey is in line to make his debut on Saturday against Preston at Oakwell.
Barnsley beat off MK Dons to land their man. Said Davey: "He is an athletic central midfielder who gets the occasional goal. He has dominated midfields in that division. Having watched him and had other staff watch him, we feel he is an excellent addition to the squad." Three bids were made by Barnsley, starting at £25,000 and it is understood that yesterday a £50,000 fee was agreed and a two-and-a-half year contract signed. The six-footer began his career at home town club Huddersfield Town. He made over 70 appearances for them before moving on a free transfer in June 2004 to Bury. In two-and-a-half years he has notched 93 league starts for the League Two club. Mattis is a former player of the year at Gigg Lane. He has scored four goals this campaign but is one booking away from a one match suspension. His contract at Bury ran out at the end of this season. Barnsley have a number of other offers for players on the table. They missed out on veteran defender Sean Gregan who quit Leeds United to join Oldham despite Barnsley tabling a bid to the player. The offer from Oakwell did not match Oldham's two-and-a-half-year contract. Gregan is 32 and can play centre-back or central midfield. He appeared for Darlington, Preston and West Brom before moving to Leeds in 2004. He was a regular in the team that reached last season's play-off final. Barnsley Supporters Trust are backing the new management team under Davey to the hilt. Davey and his No 2 Ryan Kidd were guest speakers at the Trust's meeting on Tuesday and chairman Alan Bloore said: "Both Simon and Ryan answered questions openly and honestly and greatly impressed the audience with their drive and ambition. "Following this question and answer session, it was proposed that the Supporters Trust should offer their full support and backing to both "Simon and Ryan, and the Trust have full confidence in both the Board of Directors of Barnsley FC. This proposal was passed unanimously." Left back Paul Heckingbottom has missed training this week with a stomach bug. He is shitting himself because Barnsley have finally brought in a half decent left back to replace him.
http://www.mysporttoday.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=4867&ArticleID=1967530&sitecode=shef&sportcode=barnsley
