    Ritchie waiting on contract
Chairman focusing on 'more pressing problems'
    Richard Sutcliffe
GORDON SHEPHERD insists Barnsley must focus on more pressing matters than Andy Ritchie's new contract after talks were put on the back-burner.
The Reds manager's deal runs out next summer and his agent had been speaking to the club over an extension only for it to be revealed after Saturday's defeat to Crystal Palace that discussions were on hold.
Ritchie, who led his side to promotion against all the odds last season, has admitted to feeling "very disappointed and let down".
However, chairman Shepherd believes the club's lowly position in the Championship and the hunt for new players ahead of Thursday's transfer deadline should take priority.
The Oakwell chairman last night told the Yorkshire Post: "I feel there are more pressing problems for the football club than Andy's contract.
"We need to start winning games and need to get someone in on loan before Thursday's deadline. The most urgent matter is our league position: that affects 10,000 people and not just one of us. The contract situation has become obsessive and when I open a newspaper, there is always something being written about it.
"If it was due to be renewed at the end of December, then I could understand it. But it is next July.
"I am not saying it is not urgent, but there are other things that are more urgent. We need to focus on the football and the two home games (against Ipswich and Southend) we have coming up."
The transfer deadline is looming large with no more emergency loans apart from goalkeepers being allowed after 5pm on Thursday until the start of January.
Because of their position of second bottom in the Championship, Barnsley are keener than most to bolster their squad after suffering 11 defeats in their opening 18 games.
Shepherd said: "We have chucked all sorts of players' names at Andy for consideration, and I stress only for consideration. What he does with them is down to Andy. The final decision is and has always been Andy's.
"We put a couple to him last week: one was Matthew Bates at Middlesbrough, who has since joined Ipswich and had a great game for them on Sunday.
"(Sunderland's) Tommy Miller was another but he has now gone to Preston. There have been a number of players that have been discussed and Andy has been to see a couple of them, but felt they were not right for us.
"I was in this morning, as was Andy, and we had a meeting. Things were fine, our relationship is still okay. We had a cup of tea and a chat. Andy was talking about one or two he would like to bring in, so he is going after them.
"I have always tried to support Andy when he wanted to bring in people like Marc Richards and Tommy Wright. If we get a couple in now, maybe come January they will be available on permanent transfers."
As for a possible contract extension for Ritchie, whom Sheffield Wednesday were refused permission to speak to before appointing Brian Laws, Shepherd insists the matter is still on-going.
He said: "We saw Andy's agent about three weeks ago and he put forward certain suggestions. These included what he would want in terms of numbers for next season.
"He submitted his views and we didn't say 'yes' or 'no'. The document of suggestions is with our solicitors . In due course, they will then be discussed at a board meeting."
Ritchie had been hoping for a swift conclusion to the talks and said yesterday: "I went to see the chairman last week and he said that, as far as he was concerned, I have got eight months to run on my contract and there will not be any talks in the foreseeable future.
"I am feeling very disappointed and let down."

    Like I said yesterday..

what happens when we don't sign anyone? Whose fault will it be? No doubts AR will name names of targets that we have missed, but who to believe as to why we missed them? The strange thing is that if we could attract Ehgiou or Parlour then we could perhaps attract others in their wake as we presumably mean business in staying up.

It was on Sky so why not watch it?

They are our next opposition so it makes sense to switch the telly on and see them in action.</p>
