Are we looking at this the wrong way around? Could it be that she doesn't earn enough?

Its an interesting arguement and one that im in agreement with you on.

However, when it comes to councils its very much crying wolf when it comes to poverty.

When council taxes are increasing upwards of 4% a year with services getting cut to the bare bone I find it very difficult to justify the salaries.

I’m torn tbh . On the one hand I think these COs are paid far too much across the board but if we don’t pay the going rate we left behind.
If we gonna look at these positions it’s no good looking at just a few and bemoaning what they are getting paid then hire someone on far less wages but bereft of ideas.
Looking at individual councils is the wrong way of curtailing it imo a moratorium is needed on exec wages otherwise it’s gonna go the way of football where the best can charge what they want .

MP has a much larger earning potential after she is booted out of politics. There a book to be written and speeches at £250k a time. Blair has made a mint since he quit.

I'm with you here Marlon. Some of the stuff done by people at higher levels in councils is massive, although there are some who don't pull their weight/are crap/aren't understood by people in different departments, take your pick.

If they were to move to a similar private sector job, they'd be paid significantly more, and be under much less (external) scrutiny for doing so.

Hence the council needs to keep pay at a decent rate to keep people in the job who can do it, cope with the stress and won't just leave for the private sector, while at the same time balancing budgets against funding cuts year after year after year.

Personally I don't like that so much of a shrinking budget is used on paying people at the top, especially when there are vital services to be paid for. However, in the situation we're in, there's not a great deal we can do without having the budgets run by people with little knowledge or experience who are willing to work for (comparatively) little pay.

I'm glad it's not my decision to make, and I don't like the way it gets played in the media. Hope that made sense!

This is what I was referring to yesterday. I can't tell if you're being critical or sympathetic, so I'll assume you agree.

How many staff do BMBC have, what is their annual turnover, how much public responsibility do they have, and what would be a comparative salary for an equivalent private sector management position at CEO level? I'd be willing to bet it'd be more than £155k.

I can't think of such a diverse business organisation, although I'm sure someone could enlighten me.

Neither really. I would expect the PM to earn more than a CEO of a local council though. One in Brum on close to £500k which I do think is excessive regardless of it being a big city. But CEO's in the private sector get joke salaries in my opinion, when you look at the pay gap to their general workforce.

An ex PM has in a much better position to pick up a well paid job. Starting of with their memoirs and then giving speeches at £250000 a time.
