BARNSLEY hope to sign Doncaster Rovers winger Michael McIndoe just 24 hours after landing Crystal Palace midfield player Sam Togwell.
The Yorkshire neighbours have agreed a £120,000 fee for McIndoe who returned to Belle Vue this summer following a loan spell at Derby County.
Manager Andy Ritchie also wanted to sign Aston Villa winger Peter Whittingham yesterday but was unable to compete with a bid of £500,000 from Championship rivals Wolves.
Crystal Palace Palace have lodged a six-figure bid for Barnsley's highly-rated goalkeeper Scott Flinders, who has previously spent time on trial at Chelsea and Wigan Athletic.
Talks between the two clubs were on-going last night and Barnsley are willing to do business because Republic of Ireland international Nick Colgan has recently committed his future to Oakwell.
Money from the sale of Flinders would strengthen Ritchie's spending power after a period of frustration in the transfer market following the club's promotion to the Championship. A number of potential targets have already turned down the Tykes and prize assets Stephen McPhail and Chris Shuker both snubbed offers of new deals to go elsewhere.
Ritchie is also in need of a new striker after Daniel Nardiello suffered a broken collarbone in training that rules him out of the start of the season.
French Under-20 international striker Garra Dembele was on trial from French First Division club Auxerre but has not been offered a permanent deal.
Togwell, 21, has yet to start a league game for Palace but spent six months on loan at Port Vale last season and has also played on loan at Northampton Town and Oxford United.
Ritchie said: "I have watched Sam a few times and he has always impressed me.
"He can play quite a few different roles but I would think his best for us could be as a defensive midfield player."
McIndoe's arrival is subject to the agreement of personal terms and talks are expected to take place at Oakwell today.
The 26-year-old has spent the last three seasons at Rovers after recovering from a personal battle against alcohol addiction which threatened his career during his early days at Luton Town.
He was transfer-listed at his own request by Rovers in March after expressing a desire to play Championship football. Although he was given that opportunity by Derby, he started just six games and was allowed to return to Rovers this summer.
"We have made an enquiry and we have spoken to his agent, " said Ritchie last night. "At this stage, we are waiting for answers which we will hopefully be getting on Wednesday.
"I wouldn't say it has been a frustrating summer in the transfer market," said Ritchie.
"Yes, we have lost out on one or two players because we couldn't compete financially but we know our budget and we know what we are able to spend."
Ritchie, meanwhile, has still to decide whether to offer a new deal to midfield player Richard Kell who has made only four appearances for the club since arriving with a broken leg from Scnuthorpe United last summer.
Kell is currently out of contract but training with a view to proving his fitness and securing a deal. However, he may miss this weekend's pre-season trip to the Isle of Man due to a slight Achilles problem.
"Richard has not trained for the last two days," said Ritchie.
"It is unfortunate that it has happened to him really but it is an injury that occurs often in pre-season because of the hard ground.
"He has a bit of tendonitis around his achilles but that should settle down with a little bit of treatment and rest."
