Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Andy Ritchie's men made the 18-mile journey to the Galpharm Stadium and recorded a richly-deserved victory. Three goals in 20 second-half minutes secured an aggregate 3-2 success and set up a play-off final showdown with Swansea on May 27 at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

A penalty from Paul Hayes shortly before the hour mark, and further strikes from Paul Reid and Daniel Nardiello, rewarded Barnsley's dominance while Jonathan Worthington's 65th-minute equaliser was not enough for Huddersfield.

Since their flirtation with the Premiership in 1997-98 and play-off final defeat two seasons later, Barnsley have been floundering. But their renaissance is gathering steady pace under Ritchie's astute guidance and they will head to the Principality in confident mood next weekend.

Prompted by skipper Stephen McPhail, the visitors made a purposeful start though it was Huddersfield who fashioned the first noteworthy goalscoring opportunity after seven minutes. Left-back Danny Adams found space on the left flank and whipped in a cross which veteran striker Andy Booth volleyed narrowly over the bar from 10 yards.

Moments later Barnsley caught Huddersfield cold and it required a fine save from Terriers goalkeeper Paul Rachubka to deny Martin Devaney after the winger had scampered clear down the right flank. Huddersfield then produced a classic counter-attack of their own which saw Tykes goalkeeper Nick Colgan race off his line to deny Worthington.

Just like the first leg, when Gary Taylor-Fletcher's strike secured Huddersfield's slender victory, there was again precious little to separate the sides. Barnsley, however, threatened to make the breakthrough on several occasions but failed to match their neat approach play with the killer touch in front of goal.

But 13 minutes after the restart Barnsley's vibrant approach reaped rich dividends when Brian Howard swung in a dangerous cross towards Hayes. Huddersfield defender Danny Schofield inexplicably shoved Hayes in the back and after referee Chris Foy pointed immediately to the spot Hayes coolly fired home the penalty.

However, Barnsley's lead lasted just seven minutes as McPhail's hideously under-cooked backpass sold Colgan woefully short. Booth immediately slid in to deflect the ball goalwards before Worthington arrived to force the ball over the line.

The response from Barnsley was emphatic as they regained the lead with 19 minutes remainingwhen Reid nodded home a corner and Nardiello's tap-in sealed the win and sent 4,000 visiting fans wild.
