Despite the frustration and disappointment of last night, I was probably the only one of a Barnsley persuasion celebrating. After a frustrating twelve months of a failed prostatectomy and hormone suppressant therapy yesterday I had my last day of month long daily radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Last night’s disaster only reinforced my views that there are things in life, like life itself, that are so much more important than football. Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men and kills 30 men a day in UK. I have posted previously and make no apologies for doing so again. If spotted early enough it is curable. For what ever reasons, unlike women, men are reluctant to get problems checked out. I urge men 50+, if you haven’t already done so, get a PSA test. Its a blood test, there’s no broddling and poking up your jacksy. Simple, just go and do it. I’m not completely ‘out of the woods’ yet, as I’ve two years of leuprorelin injections and PSA tests, but as I always say “what’s the alternative.”
Great post mate. My father in law also had it, and is happily now recovered. It was only discovered due to a blood test. He was relatively young at the time, only 58, but the doctor advised him to have one as a precaution. Good job he did. He's now 71 and a picture of health, more active than many 50 year olds. Glad to hear you're also on the mend.
Wishing you the best in your recovery. Thank you for the timely post to provide a bit of perspective to another bad result last night.
I finished 37 radiotherapy treatments about a year ago but I have been going downhill with pain, I have been to see docs and every time I have been fobbed off with painkillers etc. I also use intermittent catheters at times. Eventually a few months ago I went to see the urologist and they decided on a cystoscopy. I had this and they found A stone in my bladder that they couldn’t find with a cystoscopy 2 years ago. I got a call yesterday to have it taken out next Tue in Pinderfields. Thing is anything to do with nhs these days is to keep at em. As George says above you have to be proactive on this, get it checked. All the best George. Update.. all been cancelled.. back to the pain and sleepless nights.
So sorry to hear this, but I’m sure it will get sorted, keep your chin up. It may be cold comfort but I can only sing the praises of everyone on my journey. Chris Lambert my GP at Walderslade, the urology teams at Barnsley GH and Hallamshire and the radiographers at Weston Park, they all have been off the scale with their kindness and professionalism.
