Not bad except it wasn't that convincing as they state, we deserved a draw in my book.

Leeds warmed up for the 2005-06 Championship season with a convincing 2-1 win over Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.

United began with what for the most part is likely to be the team that starts against Millwall in eight days time, and that included the new centre-half pairing of Paul Butler and Sean Gregan.

Dan Harding appears to be in pole position at left-back, whilst Jermaine Wright has been handed a chance on the right wing in the absence of Steve Stone through injury.

The forward pairing of David Healy and Robbie Blake more or less picks itself with Rob Hulse and Ian Moore out injured.

The goalkeeping position is less certain with Neil Sullivan fit after his op but it's been Bennett who has prospered this pre-season during the Scot's absence.

Leeds began the game well after initially weathering the Barnsley storm that saw former United midfielder Jacob Burns force a good save out Ian Bennett with a curling shot from the edge of the area.

Blake was the first to threaten the Barnsley goal when he hit a shot on the half-volley eight yards out that came back off the bar. Hopefully those are the type of shots that will go in after August 6th.

Leeds continued to press and on another attack Shaun Derry played a great ball out to Blake and the forward's cross from the left wing was headed across the face of goal towards Healy for the tap-in, but Barnsley defender Neil Austin just got his head in the way in the nick of time.

Healy did get the ball in the back of the net on ten minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Eddie Lewis is looking comfortable on the left wing and on the quarter hour mark he showed a little of himself as an attacking force. from Wright's corner the ball was headed out to Lewis and the USA international struck a volley from 25-yards that fizzed narrowly wide of the left hand post.

Midway through the half and the home side nearly had some good luck when Paul Hayes' shot took a wicked deflection that almost caught out Bennett as he back-pedalled and turned the ball away from under his own bar. It would have been a freakish goal to concede and thankfully Paul Butler was there to clear the loose ball.

Leeds pressure finally paid off just before the half hour mark when David Healy scored his first pre-season goal.

Healy took aim from the edge of the area with a left-footed drive on the run that Nick Colgan got down to but still couldn't prevent the Northern Ireland international's shot from finding the back of the net.

Neil Sullivan came on at half time to get his first taste of pre-season action. Last season's player of the year looked as steady as ever and appeared to be untorubled by his recent

Eirik Bakke was teed up for a shot from the edge of the area but put in a mild effort. When the Norwegian was later replaced on 70 minutes he was given a rapturous send-off by the Leeds fans

Tony Vaughan was allowed to find space in front of Sullivan's goal for the shot but fortunately the centre-back fired high and over with the goal at his mercy.

The second goal for United came on 61 minutes and it was Healy's cross from the right hand side that did most of the damage, landing perfectly for Blake who met it with a firm header past the Barnsley keeper.

Blake was on target again a minute later but this time the flag went up for offside.

Barnsley came back into the game ten minutes after Blake's goal when former Manchester United youngster Daniel Nardiello placed a low shot past Sullivan after being played into space behind Kelly.

The home side could have been level straight after the goal but Kelly put in a good tackle to prevent Robbie William from being presented with a chance.

With just three subs used in the game it had been important to get another full 90 minutes into as many people as possible and thankfully too there were no more injuries to report.

It had been a good work out from Leeds and the sharpness that appeared to be missing from the previous friendlies was there, especially upfront where Blake and Healy look to have a good understanding already.
