    HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1 (Fagan 41)
    BARNSLEY 1 (Souza 69)

DENNIS Souza made the headlines for all the right reasons as his second half goal earned a share of the spoils at the Galpharm Stadium after the Reds struggled to get going against the unbeaten league leaders.

With virtually a fully fit first team squad and an international break coming up, coach Ryan Kidd was able to send out arguably the strongest reserve team side of the season against the table-topping Terriers. Luke Steele, Marciano Van Homoet, Dennis Souza, Martin Devaney, Kayode Odejayi and Maceo Rigters all started the game along with young first-teamers Jacob Butterfield and Simon Heslop. Academy starlets Michael Tieman, Martin Grundy and Jamil Adam made up the squad.

Barnsley were on the front foot in the opening exchanges and Devaney's mazy run gave Rigters a great chance inside the first 60-seconds but the Dutchman was denied by Simon Eastwood's brilliant save.

The Reds were caught cold on seven minutes when Aiden Chippendale managed to break his shackles down the left flank and race goalward but his low drive flew a foot or so wide of Steele's far post. The unbeaten Terriers had a big shout for a penalty waved away seconds later when Chris Fagan's cross smacked into Teiman's outstretched arm in the area but the referee waved away his appeals.

Souza went close from a corner as his volley was hacked away off the line before David Heagney's break through should really have resulted in a Terriers spot kick on 16 minutes after the striker was cleaned out in the area by Steele. The Reds goalkeeper made amends just seconds later when Heagney again found himself in behind the Barnsley defence but Steele was in no mood to be beaten and did very well to turn his low shot around away from goal.

Steele then enjoyed a massive slice of luck on 18 minutes when Joe Skarz corner evaded his grasp but the Terriers were unable to make the loose ball count. Steele again was the busier of the two keeper's seconds later when he got down quickly to hold Fagan's left-foot volley.

Odejayi finally had the chance race in on goal on 26 minutes but Eastwood was quickly out to nick the ball away from the big striker at the final moment.

The Reds finally crafted a clear chance on 30 minutes after Rigters had been fouled right on the far touch line. Devaney swung a great free kick into the danger area for Odejayi to head goalward but Eastwood was in the right place to make a decent stop. Butterfield's corner dropped nicely for Souza to attack but the big Brazilian never looked comfortable going for the ball and his header dropped well wide.

Huddersfield again got the better of the Reds back line on 35 minutes when Souza's wayward clearance put Fagan clean through on goal. The striker did all the hard work by knocking the ball past Steele but somehow put his shot into the sidenetting with the goal gaping.

Odejayi had Huddersfield chasing on 38 minutes as he carried the ball half the length of the field and stumbled through three half-hearted challenges before finding Adam free on the left hand touch line. The youngster though could not put his shot past Eastwood and fired tamely wide.

Huddersfield made their bright first half count on 41 minutes when the Reds made a mess of dealing with Skarz well rehearsed corner and Fagan was able to smash the ball home from 12 yards.

Heslop could have put his side back on level terms just three minutes later as he burst onto Rigters' cross and through on Eastwood but the midfielder blazed wide of the post.

Huddersfield fired the first shot in anger after the break on 47 minutes when Fagan hammered one straight at Steele from 22 yards. At the other end Rigters lashed an effort high and wide seconds later as the Reds looked to get a foothold in the game after a disappointing opening half.

The Terriers should have been further in front just a minute later when Heagney raced onto another Souza slip but his path to goal was blocked by Grundy's last-gasp intervention. At the other end Odejayi managed to get in behind Town and give Rigters a clear sight of goal on 50 minutes but the Dutchman was denied by Spencer Harris' block. Odejayi had the better of his man from Butterfield's corner but saw his looping header hacked off the post.

Heagney then managed to find a yard of space in the area on 55 minutes after turning well past Van Homoet but Steele managed to parry his well-struck shot away and grab the ball at the second attempt.

Reuben Noble-Lazarus was given the chance to impress against his hometown club on 56 minutes when he replaced Adam on the left wing.

It should have been two on the hour mark as the Reds defence were caught horribly square from James Berrett's through ball and Fagan raced in on goal. Steele did wonderfully well again to keep the Reds in the game with a fine save.

The Reds should have been level on 68 minutes when Odejayi's flick in the area put Butterfield clean through but Eastwood somehow managed to turn the ball around the far post. Eastwood's luck ran out just seconds later as he dropped Butterfield's corner into the path of Souza and the Brazilian tapped the ball into an empty net.

The goal lifted the Reds but killed the game as both sides cancelled each other out in the closing moment. Skarz fired a free kick over the bar on 89 minutes while Rigters had the Reds best chance for a winner in stoppage time when he shot straight at Eastwood from 18 yards.

reading between the lines, adam is shunted to the left wing to accomodate

oddjob and rigters to play up front, who neither scored AGAIN.
here's a fecking idea let adam and noble-lazarus play up front and stop giving these two waste of space the opportunities.

or to look at it another way

Could you say that Simon Daveys inability to sign enough left sided players in the last 3 seasons since he came here has meant that our best prospects to come from the academy in years are having to play out of position to fill the void left by davey's transfers?

my point is supertyke, adam and lazarus had an opportunity to play up front with 1st team players

around them, all season they have played reserve football with lads their own age. what an opportunity with no pressure, and the likes of devaney to play off.
the management side of this club baffles me at times.
bits of the report say, oddjob stumbled through a couple of times, and people on here want him partnering mifsud!!!!!!!!!!
as for rigters, words fail me

    or another way

he's being played out wide to help his all round game, just like Agbonlahor & Walcott were.

I can't believe people are moaning, there were groans when it was just academy lads in the reserves & then there's moans when there are first teamers in there. It's pathetic.
