It's Christmas and it's time the games came out again.

I've fired up the spectrum for a graphics feast of Yai Ar Kung-Fu, are you in?

Too late, I've just slowly but amusingly approached you by holding down up/right and fire. 42 flying kicks later and I reached you for half a ying yang thing.

Unlucky. I'm trying a roundhouse now for a full ying yang, although I can't get the combination right I'm just dipping and popping up again. Basically I'm defenceless.

    Beat that.

Never played that one. I was too busy becoming the world's leading authority on Atic Atac.

    Figures

That was definitely for cissy boys.

oooh I'm a wizard or whatever it was, I had a low attention span. All I remember about that game was something about going down a ladder at the start. Then Dallas came on telly..

    RE: Oh no.

At least I was remembering a vaguely cool game. Defender, Galaxian, space invaders all a bit samey.

Not like Yai Ar Kong-Fu with it's changing.......erm.....backdrop. and a bird that flew by.

Is that what I meant? toe-toe 2 player game with a budda in the background saying "fojgsksjdbhzl" which I think was 'fight' but the sound card wasn't much then.

Used to have a flag to point at who had won?

    Soundcard on a Spectrum?

Is that what you call it - in that case my microwave oven has a better soundcard!

Some of the games though on the Speccy were excellent - at least they had gameplay which is more than can be said about many these days where it's style over substance.

Brian Bloodaxe was my favourite, oh and Match Day when the pixel clash would make the players disappear!

did you ever play football manager. With the stick man highlights?

    Quality

"GOAL" or a fart noise depending on the limited highlights..

No they were different games. WOTEF is the daddy, but then again I had an Amstrad 464 so WTF do I know.

Currently frantically searching for Sensi Soccer for mobile.

Wasn't that Football Manager 2 - with a selection of about 10 goals/highlights....you could tell as soon as it came on whether it was a goal or not.
I had a ZX81 with Football Manager on, divisions of 8 teams and screen went blank while it processed and you found out whether you had scored or opposition. My defence is 8 to their attack of 6, my attack 7 to their defence of 8 and midfields are both 8.....yep we'll win this one!

And to think the young un was saying that the match graphics on FM2005 could be done better!

    RE: Oh no.

There was a Galaxian in the White Hart, I became so obsessed I was missing shifts. Another lad I never met and I used to leave all time top scores on it with notes for each other. I came one day to find a score of 80,000 on it and a note saying, "Looks like that's it then." I had to agree, to reach that score you had to get through the bit where they ALL swoop at once for what seems like an eternity. A couple of days later I did it and a couple of days after that I finished it.

I got through the 80,000 barrage only to find that what followed was an absolute 5 minute onslaught. It was surreal. I took my finger off the fire button, leaned back, relaxed and gazed at the screen. It was like something else was controlling my hand as it flickered. Eventually and quite suddenly they just stopped coming. I didn't know what to expect next and wondered how much longer I could keep up the concentration. None of us around the machine could have guessed. The game started again, the score remained but they just filed on sedately. I'd done it, I'd beaten the machine, I'd completed Galaxian, it had nothing left to throw at me, it was spent. I was in ecstacy, complete, I had ascended to the hall of the video game gods.

I can't even remember what note I left or what my opponents reply was. All earthly things became dream-like. I was king of another world. When I saw three people walking in a certain formation my fingers would flick involuntarily, the fools didn't know how easily I could destroy them.

I don't know how long I spent in that world but when I returned I had no job and couldn't remember where I lived. My teeth were visible through my lips and my hair was in dreadlocks.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it.
