By Sky News SkyNews - 2 hours 41 minutes ago
Former players have rallied behind fallen football hero Paul Gascoigne.

A host of stars, past and present, urged everyone from the game to offer their support.

Gascoigne was detained under the Mental Health Act and sectioned on Wednesday night.

It followed an incident at the Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle.

The hotel said the star had made other guests and staff feel "threatened".

The 40-year-old has been treated numerous times for drink and mental health problems.

Former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce, who enjoyed a playing career that overlapped with Gascoigne, said: "I know Paul quite well. I have had many a night out with him.

"He has come through before but he will need the support of everyone around him and let's hope he is OK."

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate, a former England team-mate of Gascoigne's, also voiced support.

"He would do anything for anybody and, hopefully, people will do the same for him now because he obviously needs that help," he said.

A Northumbria Police spokesman confirmed a 40-year-old man was detained under the Mental Health Act at the Hilton Hotel.

Living with someone who has a mental illness (one very different from Gazza's) i know that is't something that is very distressing for everyone who knows the person as well of course for the person themselves.

Having read the book about Gazza's illness and his attempts to overcome it I hope that he continues to try and see's some improvement.

Will hopefully get better help that George Best

the saddest thing is not being able to help themselves & having power over hangers on who may otherwise be able to give the tough love needed in these situations
