KETTERING have axed Paul Gascoigne for boozing - after just 39 days as boss.

Gazza, 38 reacted angrily by trying to buy out the club and insisting he will board the team bus for tomorrow's Conference North game at Alfreton.

Kettering chairman Imraan Ladak then hit back by claiming the former England hero has given team talks while drunk and has even been reported by a referee.

But Gazza responded tonight by insisting his drinking never got out of hand.

He said: "I had a double brandy before one of the games, but it used to be four bottles of whiskey a day - it's not now.

"I had a glass of wine after one game and told him to stay out of the team."

Ladak insisted he had no choice but to sack his "childhood idol" after "37 separate incidents".

He said: "Unfortunately Paul Gascoigne has been under the influence of alcohol before, during and after several first team games and training sessions.

"This has been noticeable to the board of Directors, players, coaching staff and sections of the media. A referee and fourth official have also filed a report with the FA.

"I have tried to help Paul through this difficult period but gave an undertaking to the board prior to my takeover that if Paul hit the bottle I would remove him as manager.

"Paul has not reacted well to the news and has made numerous threats that if I do not sell him the club he will use his name and the media to turn the players and supporters against me.

"This has already begun with Paul calling a number of the first team last night, under the influence of alcohol.

"Paul even told players not to report for training at MK Dons where they were due to commence full-time training.

"I have not interfered with team selection or player purchases and departures but have been disappointed with the way two players in particular have been treated by Paul.

"I also made clear that I felt Paul had turned a winning team into a confused and unsettled one by playing players out of position and being drunk on the team bus and in the dressing room for his team talks."

Spurs legend Gazza, who took over as part of a consortium, responded to his sacking by saying:

Gazza said of Ladak tonight: "He's not the chairman, he's Imraan the doctor.

"I'm Paul Gascoigne and I take charge of this club.

"I'm a multi-millionnaire and I'm angry. I've tried to buy him out already. I told him it was the fans and Paul Gascoigne against a doctor - who will win?

"I know that the supporters, the players and the staff of Kettering Town are all behind me, not him.

personally I think sky should not have broadcast the interview-imho he had been drinking-contradicted himself on a number of occasions and really came across as a sad person-he actually said" I'm a genius"-and footballing wise he was up there but I'm afraid he's lost it completely-hope he recovers but doubt it
