Was reading through an old article from my website and a Birmingham supporter, when asked what it was like to be back in the Premiership, somewhat cynically replied that it was terrible - inflated prices, poor atmospheres etc. So, how exactly is the Championship - regardless of selling out the stadium - what's a matchday for a fan like and what are the prices like?
People complain a lot about the state of The Premiership for fans - working-class being priced out - 'corporate tickets', lack of atmosphere etc. So I'm intriuged.
To be honest with you I think lower league fans are more passionate. Even at the lower levels you're talking around £20 a ticket, and you do have to travel to some pretty **** grounds.
Twenty quidish tickets. Remember thought here are some clubs with a lot of support in the championship. Its better than League 1 I'll say that . Can't wait to go to Anfield.
Premiership fans can't help a) who they were brought up to support and b) the state of the grounds they have to travel to. If you travel home and away, you deserve respect as a supporter. But you are right in many ways - I see the lower leagues as being what football was like as I knew it before the Sky generation - where deals and sponsors now control the price of the tickets for fans. Chelsea charge away fans £45 for a ticket and without wanting to come over all Worthers Original, that would have been enough to go to roughly 7 or 8 games in the early 90s.
In some ways I'm envious of that, by the way. You will all have heard of FC United - I've spoken to a few of the lads that go to those games, who say the banter, atmosphere and experience is far better than it was when they followed Man Utd, having to spend £30+ and endure a soulless atmosphere.

Well, Wolves and Ipswich charge away fansnigh on £30 to get in their games which is shocking, so its not exactly a snip. Most clubs are more realistic and charge about £24. The matchday atmospheres can be as good as the premiership but not too often- local derbys and grudge matches (like Leicester v Plymouth other day) can fill stadiums of any size and generate a brilliant atmosphere.
Barnsley will only ever fill Oakwell for derbies, and even then only Sheffield Wednesday really come close to generating a capacity crowd at Oakwell.
Fans in the Championship can pick and choose games however on the plus side, there's rarely a time when anyone misses out (with the exception of Anfield of course, but thats cos everyone wants to see us play your lot!). The facilities at Championship grounds are generally quite good- sometimes the food suffers (Oakwell doesn't have the best catering in the stands) but generally you can have a pint and a pie in relative comfort. Unless you go to Colchester, which is like going to a non-league side (although they move to a new ground next season).
Generally many feel ripped off by the prices in our league,as its not a lot cheaper than some prem grounds, and the quality of football is often way below. But it won't change because players in the championship are now on decent money, and they have to find it from somewhere.

I live up in Glasgow and do a fair share of away games aswell as beign a ST holder. And, in my pesonal opinion you can't beat an away day, even at places like Saltergate(Chesterfield), it's what football is all about. Whereas, recently I took my Dad to Old Trafford to watch the demolition of Newcastle United and they were all moaning and groaning at half time ebcause it was 0-0 and Shay Given had made a few decent saves, they expected to win and win comfortably(which they did in the end). To me, the fact that we're so unpredictable at times and we know we're not exactly world beaters, gives it that extra edge.
Cheers for that response - and to LDRed - think I might pop that into the article I produced, if you don't mind. Make sure to tell us how Anfield compares in terms of facilities and atmosphere.
I would do, but I registered for RAWK yesterday and I've not been approved yet
Sort it out seethi

Someone had a similar problem and asked about it the other day. I'll ask the admin on there. I take it your username is Harrow Tyke again?
Watched a few FC United games on channel M despite standard of football the fans sung non stop for 90 mins atmosphere looked great, however no opposing fans for the banter. Do you think what happened there could happen with Liverpool.
It's difficult to say. Nothing has been mentioned, but with ownership seeming as though it is going to start changing hands again, no-one knows what is going to happen. If ticket prices starting rising like they did at United, I'd imagine something would be created, yes.
I would echo what Mr harrow said. In many ways its not that different between the premiership and the championship The major difference is the availability of tickets. Its easy to get tickets for 99% of championship games. However I also get the feeling thats the same for a lot of premiership teams To be honest outside the top 10 or so n the premiership the next 20 -25 teams in the football pyramid are all of a similar standard. At any one time any of us could be in the premiership or championship. As an example teams like bolton, fulham, wigan etc are closer to Barnsley than liverpool
