Genuine question for the remain voters(This isn't a dig or point scoring), im asking for an article im writing...

If the EU had put to us the option to stay in the common market, but gave us complete control over the freedom of movement in and out of our borders, would you still be as Europhile as you are now?

Like I say, this isnt point scoring etc, im just writing an article on how important the freedom of movement was to REMAIN voters and how important the common market was to leave voters...

Freedom of movement is one of the most important benefits of membership

not so much for me (I'm an old git) but for the younger generations.

I don't quite get your question regarding 'would you still be as Europhile as you are now?': do you mean 'would you still have voted to remain?', or 'would you like the EU to the same degree?'

Both really. Would it have changed your opinion of the EU enough to change the way you voted...

I like the freedom of movement. One of the main reasons for me voting to stay was that I wanted the option of going and living anywhere in Europe.

I am with John Barnes on the freedom of movement.
We the West have created this crisis of immigration (and terrorism) by disastrous meddling in the affairs of other nations. We have caused untold suffering in millions of innocent people.
We have a moral obligation to look after these people. The rest of Europe are doing much more than we are to help. Its like accepting Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. We cannot morally turn our back on these people.
Not to mention the economic argument – the evidence is clear, while a tiny minority may claim state benefits, the economy as a whole has benefited from the influx of people.
Our NHS appears to be run almost entirely by recent arrivals.
I work in the University sector where free flow of people is an absolute necessity to exchange ideas and ways of thinking.
Plus personally every immigrant I know is lovely person and the UK would be a poorer place in every way without them here.

Freedom of movement is the #1 reason I voted to stay, even in the face of some serious reservations about the EU itself. Having the EU in its current form without freedom of movement would be pretty much the worst of both worlds for me.

    I'm 30.

    I'm 60.

I voted remain for many reasons, not least because I have kids in their 20s who might want to go and live in Europe, particularly my youngest lad (22) who follows Atletico Madrid and has often talked about going to live there. Also my sister (62) lives in Andalucia and before that in Madrid (since 1979), so Europe and the idea of closer relations is natural for me.

Wouldn't have changed my vote. Not the biggest issue for me. In general I'm all for the freedom of movement, but there is more important stuff.

Not sure if that answers your question

    Re: I'm 60.

The point of the EU for me is the freedom of people to choose where they live and work. So I would have liked this incarnation of the EU less but would probably still have voted remain as the best of two unattractive options, depending on what limits/ powers were assigned to the UK. It seems an impossible hypothesis though for us to be in the single market and total control on immigration.

    I'm 37.

    Re: I'm 60.

Thank you for everyone so has contributed so far, its interesting to see how different people identify what the EU means to them.

For example, along people in the movie and tv business(thats the sort of journalism I am involved with), i'd have thought that the freedom of movement would be the main reason they were pro EU, but it's looking more like the common market is more important to them(well, the cross section I've spoken to)...

I'm a freelance journalist, who, up to now have specialised in film and TV journalism(seeing as its a medium im passionate about). But i'm trying to expand my horizons a little.

I've had interest from a few of the red tops to take my article if i can get it finished in the next few days(if its up to scratch, that is)...

Best of luck with it. Possibly the most complex political situation I've seen in this country.

I want freedom of trade and movement, that's what the Remain vote meant for me. I'm 28 and have no interest in travelling myself. My husband is 29 and feels the same way.

69 years old and it would not have changed my view. I am a remainer based mainly on PEACE.

Not an issue for a minute with me. Mine was a very reluctant remain. I work in the political world and know the real agenda of the right is to remove employment protection and I don't think either the Labour Party or trade unions can stop this.

The trade unions will be the next to go. It's been in the pipeline for years.

Quite possibly, the main thing for me was the economy and trade is such a big part of that. I think we've dropped a massive bollock leaving the trade bloc.
