Barnsley evolved differently to other towns such as Doncaster, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Leeds and the Lancashire towns.
All of these towns had large industries within the town or city i.e. Doncaster railways, Sheffield steel, Huddersfield and Leeds cotton mills

Barnsleys one and only major industry was dotted throughout the district and not in the town because the pits were sunk where they could easily get to the coal. The villages and towns sprung up where the work was i.e. at the pit. This has resulted in a relatively small town centre with only 71,000 people living in it surrounded by large satellite towns and villages with a further 150,000 people living there. All of these villages and towns (probably excluding the western upland villages) where in walking distance of a pit.

The Wombwell / Darfield connurbation on its own would be a major town in some parts of the country.
