A couple of years ago he was playing for his university side. 16 months ago he was still with Conference North side Worcester City. He spent the first three months of this season on loan at National League side Barrow. Then Aidy White picks up a knock, George Smith is out on loan and we haven't got a left back. Williams is brought in out of the cold and doesn't put a foot wrong in an unaccustomed position as we hammer Rochdale 6-1. He's barely made a mistake since then and won the man of the match award on a couple of occasions. Yesterday he played at Wembley in front of almost 60,000 people and helped us win our first cup competition in over 100 years. That's what dreams are made of. Well in George lad.
100%. A revelation, I'm sure we'd all agree. That performance at Bradford stands out the most. Everybody asking "what the chuff is Williams playing left back for?" before watching him keep one of the divisions best wingers in check and created the goal which gave us what is now an even bigger win. I think his rise to prominence from obscurity has been a breath of fresh air in this mental, mental season.
Liked him since this amusing interview when he joined http://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/article/ill-play-anywhere-for-reds-williams-2187183.aspx
100% agree. A wonderful player. Brilliant defensive full back and I've noticed him getting forward more lately. George has potential to grow. Also noticed he's always straight into the crowd at the end of a match. Mum and dad methinks. Wonderful.
In my poorly footy hiatus, I didn't know who he was til Aidy got injured. He's been very impressive in the games I've seen and had another good one at Wembley. The first Oxford goal came down his side, but the whole team hadn't woken up that first half. James bree shows a lpt of promise, positionally naive, but that will come. Good to know we have two very capable players in that position And adaptable too, with george. Good post.
To be fair the goal cane from the left hand side which had been the problem a couple of times. Williams got caught under the ball but I wouldnt blame him the most for that goal being conceded.
Agreed mate, young jud's been brilliant since he's come in although I saw him at Preston last season and thought he looked a good prospect plus if tha stuck a big muzzy on his top lip and with his big hair he'd look like Joe Joyce, sithi.
I guess when he came from where he did it's easy to think he won't make the grade. We've had a few disappear without trace.... Well done to him and whoever scouted him. An excellent spot!
Hrs been fantastic Jay. I hope we are looking to extend his contact. He's never let us down. Tough tackler and likes to get stuck in. He's a brilliant asset for our Club. A big favourite of mine.
He looked decent to me in a home game last season, can't remember which. Looked heftier though. But I've noticed that this season, from day one - our players are very slight, toned, fit basically. Hourihane was never big before, but he's slimmer than ever, probably the graft he puts in this season. But I saw Hammill at Huddersfield last year and he looked a couple of stone heavier. Credit to the staff and the players. Huge part of the brand of football we're seeing now, fitness. I noticed a few Oxford lads were a little chubby. Maguire, MacDonald, Mullins in particular. Must be an M thing.
