Swindon manager Danny Wilson has placed West Brom and Leicester on red alert by conceding top scorer Simon Cox is likely to leave the County Ground this summer. (Daily Mirror)
Proven Championship quality? scoring goals in League 1 doesnt always mean able to do the same in the Championship. Added to which, there will be other clubs with deeper pockets interested.
RE: Like we will be able to match wages of West Brom or Leicester nt Leicester lost £10m by being relegated... why can't we match them?!
Agreed Like Matty Fryatt who two seasons ago scored FIVE championship goals. One season in the ale house league and people expect him to be banging them in next season. If Leicester have any sense they will sell him.
I've seen all the goals he's scored Absolutely fantastic, I'd take a punt on him and if he turned out a dud I'd hold my hands up. Were Kevin Phillips and Marcus Stewart proven Premiership players when they were top scorers there a few years ago? It's funny how when I suggest a League One player he's 'not proven Championship' but 'we couldn't afford him anyway'. So how are we going to compete to sign a 'proven' Championship striker then? If we matched Birmingham on wages for Kevin Phillips I'm sure we could compete for Cox. Whether we'd go to the same lengths to try and get him is another issue.
Totally different types of player If you knew much about football and had watched them both you'd realise that. Similarly why people like Nathan Blake/Geoff Horsfield etc were great in our league and hopeless in the Prem, yet Kevin Phillips and Marcus Stewart were Premier League top scorers when they went into the top flight. I'm convinced he'd do well. Jamie Ward's been doing well for Blades and he came from a division below Cox and scored less goals.
Will any of them pay more than he is "worth?" Just because a club has more financial resources, doesn't neccesarily mean they will be prepared to pay over the going rate.
RE: Will any of them pay more than he is "worth?" I guess it all comes down to how much the manager wants him.
I think the debate is more about mitigating the gamble. Large transfer fee and manageable wages or no fee and large wages. Im guessing the £1.2m for Hume couldnt be insured but £20k a week for Phillips could be, in case lightening strikes twice. Added to which, a player who has scored goals at Championship level is less of a gamble than someone who looks like he could. Not doubting that Cox is a decent player, but if it were Phillips or Cox, who would you choose? Personally, if we were to sign anyone from League 1, I'd go for Steve Howard, a player who could make a 20 goal striker from the ones we've already got.
And to add to that... Remind me which league Chris Taylor plays in, seeing as you were so adamant for months that we should sign him, yet is he proven at Championship level?
RE: I think the debate Cox would in my opinion almost certainly appreciate in value, Phillips the other way... I think Phillips is getting less effective each year. I'd go for Cox.
RE: I think the debate I agree that we need "a presence" up front as much as anything else. Howard is that type of player. I bet if you asked Matty Fryatt, he would say playing up front with Howard helped him enormously to his goal tally. A "Hulse" or "Henderson" type would be my preferred signing. I have not seen enough of Cox to have an option on him.
RE: Jamie Ward hmmmm his agent " advised " him that the blunts would double our offer which was more than double chesterfield had offered him. Lot of doubles there. the clue is £8K plus per week
had we offered jamie ward more than sheff utd, ... he would still have gone to sheff utd, barnsley said he wanted too much money, ward said he wanted to go to the better team with better chance of prem football
RE: Totally different types of player I'm sorry. I didn't realise if someone had a difference of opinion to you it meant they knew nothing about football and that you know everything. My mistake. All i'm saying is I think we need to be going for proven quality and not taking more risks on lower league players. He's wanted by premiership sides though and was in the PFA Team Of The Year for a reason.
cox is a very good player he almost beat scunny by himself last season, they drew 3-3 and he got hatrick a lad i know who plays for scunny said he was fantastic. i have kept an eye on him since that game, i agree he would be a good buy for us, unfortunately i doubt we will go for him, which is a pity
