Thanks to everyone who came down on Saturday night, yet to count up but we had more than we expected in & all in all Gerry was great value. Couple of points that were quite interesting to me: 1. He still quotes Eric Winstanley as the greatest coach he ever worked with. 2. He was refused a car parking space for a recent game at Oakwell. Other clubs offer ex players/pros two tickets for each game, no questions asked. He said it was like Fort Knox to get into Oakwell. The latter IMHO says quite a lot about the way we deal with people at BFC.
It's hardly news though is it, that the club treat its former players (especially the good uns) poorly? Hignett, Eaden, Barnard have all told tales about that. Hassell's another. And Taggart now. To be fair, I doubt any of those in charge at Oakwell would know who Gerry was. Our owner didn't even know who John Stones was apparently. Anyway, glad the evening went well. Shame I couldn't make it, summat important came up that morning. Was one of my first heroes was Gerry, hope he's doing well wherever he's at nowadays.
Out of work mate, recently let go as Chief Scout at Doncaster. Lives locally still and pretty obvious he f.cking loves the place.
When the majority of paper fanzines are going to the wall, you start one up and turn a massive profit that you give to charity. When the club shop stock a range of products that many people simply laugh at, you start producing gear that sells like hot cakes. As ex-players find it difficult to get any recognition from the club, you invite them to venues in tarn and pack them out. You do this from a laptop in your bedroom with no financial backing while holding down a full time job. The club's in a ******* right state. Maybe you should turn your hand to summat bigger?
Ha! They've got my details. I have wondered a few times if we had the reach the club does what we could do.
I approached them a while back - went to give Don a presentation on some ideas about getting people feeling engaged again before the fanzine. Was asked if I'd like to volunteer ringing round local businesses to get sponsorship instead. From the type of discussions on here I don't think what you're referring to feels anywhere near possible. Yet.
It isn't. It's nowhere near. The club is at its lowest point in all the time I've been watching, the owner is talking about leaving, but there's no buyer and the fans have got nothing. Any movement needs a leader, someone who actually gets stuff done. Know anybody like that?
It all boils down to them not understanding their customer base and judging everything by how it affects the balance sheet in my opinion.
Crackin night. Top fella too. He could talk football all night an all. Just loves the game. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
