Why should they?

Why don't I give up mine? Because I don't want to. I pay my taxes, as does a footballer.

It's not Michael Ballack's fault that a nurse earns a pittance. If Ballack's wages were halved, would a nurse's double? No.

and because they earn more they'll contribute even more.

not trying to say anything against nurses but footballer's comply with the rules and why should they be singled out over anyone else to pay extra?

    Those are exactly my feelings.

Anyone would think that footballers don't earn their money legitimately. If you think they're earning too much, stop paying for Sky, stop going to watch live football, boycott pubs which are showing live matches.

The bubble will burst one day. There is no connection between a footballer's wage and a nurse's.

    Nurse do fantastic job

Well most of them anyhow. But seems bit wierd that they should be singled out for help. Heard em saying on radio they start on over 19k and how bad that is. To me that seems a decent wage and as far as Im aware is more than some other public servants start on such as firemen and police?

Would be nice of prem players to do tho. Just seems strange to hear celebs who are on thousands aswell talkin on radio about all prem players shud do it and nurses wages are a disgrace. Come on they are not a disgrace!! Not that Im saying they dont deserve it, a lot of us could do with the extra cash cudnt we!

    I think the footballer/nurse connection is over-used.

Nobody is forcing a nurse to be a nurse. I admire them - the ones in Barnsley General who looked after my gran over Christmas were wonderful, absolutely wonderful - but if they want better money/job prospects then they should seek alternative employment.

    Its a Hardship Fund FFS

Not all nurses would qualify for help. Just like fishermens funds, rail drivers funds etc.

If people like me did seek alternative employment, and I've had offers from industry, who would look after your Gran at Xmas.... some untrained, uninterested 'carer'?

Some of us still have vocations and strongly believe in free high quality healthcare at the point of need.

Ask injured footballers who need the NHS when they're badly injured on the pitch if they'd like to support nurses.

Oh and yes pro footballers do have their own 'hardship fund' as well

    Don't disagree with that....

most nurses do a great job. It would be very nice of the prem players to do. But what you are saying Ali applies to lots other key public service roles aswell! Fire and police services have lower starting pay last I checked, who would do their job if they packed up? Its simple market forces others would train and take the work or others would move in from where they are available. I think it would be nice for the nurse to be helped out by the prem players. What I dont agree with as some dj was saying on radio today is that nurses starting salaries are a disgrace, they are simply not over 19k is a decent salary to start on?

They are advertising for carers looking after Alzheimer and schizophrenia sufferers at the place where I used to work. The rate of pay is less than £6 an hour. They too deserve far more if you ask me.

Well I dont think I could do that job, and I have admiration for those that do and are genuinely caring ppl. I think they deserve better pay than that. But they are not on standard nursing wages, and Im sure qualified nurses could demand much more than that.

Depends on how you define "nurse"

Auxilerys and HCA's who do most of the legwork earn about 12k (That orrible lime greenish uniform and the dark green uniform at Barnsley General)

Nurses (blue uniforms ) do earn more, but it aint them that do the caring in most of the cases.

Oh - and firemen, don't make me laugh. Best gig in the world being a fireman. Just look at the queue to get in! Paid to go to sleep... yes please

    I think it's a fantastic idea.

I have/have had 2 very rare illnesses in my life and if it wasn't for the Drs and Nurses (and my family) then I wouldn't be here!

Nurses are like Teachers and do the "job" because they want to not because it's well paid. They have to do lots of training and are usually the first on the scene to spot any problems when you're in hospital.

It's a shame that lots of nurses are losing their "jobs" because of cut backs and student nurses are not finishing training because they can't afford to.
Anybody who gives a little cash to help stop this happening should be applauded.
Footballers earn far more money than "normal" people and therefore can afford to give some of it to help others.
I agree that it shouldn't stop at just targetting footballers people in show businessor highly paid employment should also help but there has to be a place to start helping, so why not ask footballers first?

As I say without the care and attention I have had I wouldn't be about to celebrate my 13th birthday.

Three cheers for all you nurses out there and also for those who are going to help support them and our future nurses.

Alityke: If all nurses did seek alternative employment: a) they wouldn't all get it or b) if they did, a nurse's wages would have to go up to make the job more enticing.

I admire you. I do my job for the money. When I'm at work, I do my best, but I have no intrinsic interest in what I do. It seems as though you would almost do the job for nothing, and that's beyond words.

    How?

    Strike? Work to rule?

Most effective would be go home when you've worked your 37.5 hrs in a week. Insist on meal breaks and taking all your AL entitlement every year.

Thing is ward nurses get called on their days off to come in cos of poor staffing. only takes 1 sick patient or 1 person to be ill and everything fails.

There is no slack in the funding of ther NHS now. Do you know that most Trusts have cut staff & service to the bone over the last 2 years and they are still being asked to find savings of up to £30million in the next financial year. The government supported the Agenda for Change pay structure in the NHS and now blames that for the overspend many Trusts find themselves in.

Nurses do not have much negotiating power as just so many of us are needed to deliver services.

RE: Depends on how you define "nurse"

Yeh auxillaries have in my experience often been the nicest and best nurses Ive come across. But it is simply because there are very few qualifications other than dedication and being caring thats required. This means that ppl can be easily found to fill the roles and thats why they are paid low wages. But that is the simple fact of living in market economy world. Tend to agree with you on the firemen point mate, was just using it as an example. But nomatter what ppl think of the police they have to put up with a lot of **** and yes the probationers are paid less than nurse starting salary.

    Auxilliaries and HCA's

sorry they are NOT nurses. they perform tasks under the supervision of a qualified nurse. Yes they may perform the bedside tasks... but imho too much responsiblity is placed on their shoulders in the current NHS climate. 1 or 2 qualified nurses on a shift, often very junior inexperienced nurse is a highly stressful experience for all the ward team.

Over 50% of nurse will leave the profession during the 1st 5 years after qualifying and thats if they can get a job in the 1st place

Don't get me started on that one.

Yes, the nurses do a great job, and I wouldn't do it personally. But what about the little people at the hospital? The storekeepers (like me) ?

We have a role to fulfill. We do it - and earn little over half of what a nurse earns.

I've had some lager, so wont go any further. I may talk more about things I don't know about.

Oh no they don't only the ones who are doing it like a normal student

6k instead of a student loan and tuition fees.

Pack it in with the propaganda.

They can work as auxillery's in the massive amount of time student nurses have off to top up their wages.
