I know that it's easy to say that after the result we had today, but I was quite shocked by the sacking and my immediate reaction was to say that it was daft. No - we have been poor this season, very poor at times, and at best inconsistent - that's never comfortable, but as a consolidation season, it was what I expected. When Wilson first arrived (first time around) my recollection was that we were very poor, humdrum, and not really worth watching for the first two seasons. When Viv Anderson left us we were in real danger, and Wilson steadied the ship - not in one year, not in two. It wasn't until Wilson had been in charge a while that we started playing that really very attractive style of passing football. Now he's been given half of a season in a relegation dog fight (which we lost) a closed season where we shipped most of our first team out and then brought in the majority of a new squad. He's had half of a so-so season, and he gets the sack. These days it's getting to the point where any football manager outside the top six, who doesn't have two points per game average, is looking at the chop. For all the stats that were given in the press conference saying 'things aren't good enough' and 'we've been patient' - I don't buy it. It comes across to me that it's a rash decision, we don't have a valid contingency lined up to make immediate improvements, and now we're back to square one, scratching around for another manager with a magic wand to solve all our problems. I was easily prepared to give Wilson until the end of the season - and unless we were really staring at relegation - even longer. We need some consistency and longevity in a manager. If I was on the playing staff I'd be really fed up. The directors, the bosses running the club, need to take accountability for the continued decline of the football club. We are now adrift - no manager, low morale, limited resources, lower league football and declining attendances. What a dreadful state of affairs. I think the sacking has made it worse, not better.
Totally agree - but what can you do, they pulled the trigger. Who is going to want to take charge of this mess...?
And that sums it up for me too. Still reeling from the ridiculous events of this week and not at all surprised at today's shambles. The timing of the sacking is absurd and could only have made any sense if the new man/magician was waiting in the wings. Which he isn't. Sheer stupidity.
Let's be right, this hasn't been a 'so so season', it's been dreadful. The timing of the decision to sack him is surprising but the standard of entertainment on the pitch has been so poor that he was always gonna be under threat...
I love Danny and am disgusted at the decision but let's not rewrite history , in his first season we were superb and finished 6th.
Except at Tranmere, where we lost 6-1 after outpaying the home side for most of the game. Just about every shot they had went in.
Agreed. Presumably they brought in Wilson because he knows the club and he has a good record at this level and knows the leagues really well and had nearly 1000 games up his sleeve. None of that means he's incapable of mistakes, making bad decisions or having his team pay some crappy football - but his record suggests that given time he will invariably improve a team and get things right. No, that doesn't mean that he shouldn't be or cant be sacked, but the manner of it really bothers me. If they cant give a bloke with a proven track record more time then what does it say about the club to those managers looking at the club? It's not going to stop people applying for the job, but if they approach someone who has a decent reputation but is a bit undecided about taking the job - that sort of recent history, especially with a team without much brass, can be the difference between taking the job and waiting for a better opportunity. Words and promises by Patrick and/or Ben become empty because you know what's gone before. Sure, managers aren't in short supply, but over a period of time I worry we're not going to be able to attract the best we can, because the club has a large bell round it's neck.
Not deliberate, just my recollection through the mists of time. I remembered us being a good deal better organised than we were under Anderson - but nothing remarkable and unlikely to either go up or down. I guess we were better than I recalled!
A season is a season. You cannot say we're gonna consolidate and finish e.g. mid table. You can manage expectations. They were not being managed.
