Google lists going over Woodhead towards Man Airport then M67 M60 M67 etc down to Crewe just over 100 miles

    Woodhead > M67 > M60 > M56 > M6 about 70 miles. Wouldn't call it a nighmare, depends on traffic. A635 rather than Woodhead can have a lot less traffic.

    A635 > Oldham / pick up signs for Manchester > M60 > M56 > M6. No problem.

via Castleton and Buxton is just over 70 miles but will put 30 mins or so on yer journey time than motorways but much more scenic.
