He was bricking it. You could tell in his face. He should have been further down the list. Easy to predict He was missing.
I once missed a penalty when I was 9 years old in a 7-a-side competition at junior school. Not in a penalty shoot out, but in the game. It was saved, it was a shocking penalty, and we lost 1-0. That was 42 years ago and I still haven't got over it.
not sure how though. gold/silver goal didn't work. teams are given over 2 hours to win a game of football. in many cases, you can see teams preferring penalties, than risking losing in extra time
It's skill, mental strength and composure. As someone said above, had plenty of time to score and win the match outright Can't imagine what the lad who missed will be feeling like tonight. Head up lad.
I still think that the old American shootout system of a 1 on 1 with the attackers starting from 35 yards out is a far better idea.
GG settled 3 games in the '98 World Cup..and France won Euro 2000 with it. I think they ditched it too quickly.
Germany won Euro 96 with it as well. Personally, I thought it was absolutely awful. Teams playing full of absolute terror, and no chance to equalise for any team that fell behind. Probably a worthwhile experiment, but it was quite rightly binned imho. Having said that, now we have 5 subs, could it work as an extra 15-20 minutes before penalties, after 30 minutes of regular extra time?
I think the so called gold/silver goal rule was a decent attempt at replacing pens. But admittedly it didn't work did it, in the long run.
When you think of how much that one game is worth to the winners, its ridiculous really that it can be decided by a set of penalties.
They could mix and match. Have 15 minutes extra time, and if that doesn’t settle it, then remove a player from each team and go to GG, removing another player from each team every 5 minutes until a goal is scored. Maybe then, after 45 minutes, we can have a football equivalent of the game of chess that ends with two kings chasing each other round for eternity, or a game of darts where each player is down to double 1, whereby we have goalies taking turns at running upfield and taking a shot at each other. They can just keep playing till it gets too dark to see the ball, or one of their mum’s shout them in for supper
Yeah Venables always promoted the idea of removing a player, always thought that was a better option myself.
Yeah no idea whether it would work well but I'd love to see extra time where each team has to take a player off every 5 minutes until someone scores, just for the spectacle
Don't think this will ever happen, mate. You saw during extra time how many players weren't moving properly, going down with cramps, stretching constantly. Imo, penalties is the fairest way. Ultimately if you can't score within 2 hours of football, you should see it as a second chance being able to still go through on penalties.
What about if it ends in a draw the team that finished higher in the league goes up. Would make for a more interesting extra time as the team that finishes lower goes for it
