Well if you'd seen my pathetic attempts to pick a winner at Ponte yesterday, you'd not be asking! However, with all the usual caveats, these are my thoughts:

Goodwood has some tight turns and severe undulations, which can and often does mean that jockeys find trouble here. For that reason, I try to avoid some of the bigger field handicaps because there are always a few hard luck stories. I make an exception for the big mile handicap later in the week and the Stewards' Cup on Saturday, both of which attract classy fields.

The 2.00 over 10 furlongs with 18 runners is an example of one I'd avoid. But if you must have an interest in it I'd combine all three of Mark Johnston's (does very well here) Fire Fighting/Zand/Sennockian Star and also include Luca Cumani's Mount Logan, which always seems to run well, but has an impressive knack of finding ways to get beat.

The 4.20 (15 runners) and 5.30 (19 runners) are impossible handicaps. The 4.55 is a two year old maiden with a lot of promising sorts who are largely closely matched. I'd swerve those. That leaves:

    2.35 Vintage Stakes

Birchwood, Air Vice Marshall and Beaverbrook all ran in the Superlative Stakes at the Newmarket July Meeting. The first two are joint favourites here, but that wasn't a strong running of that race, and I like IBN MALIK (8/1) and STRONG CHALLENGE (6/1). Ibn Malik won on debut at Newmarket in a very fast time. Strong Challenge won at Goodwood, beating Gutaifan, who won a Group 2 in France yesterday. Both are open to significant improvement, and at the prices we can back them both against the favourites.

    3.10 Lennox Stakes

This should chiefly concern Toormore. Dutch Connection and Limato. Toormore is a top class colt who was purchased by Godolphin after his last run, but he doesn't seem to be progressing at this stage, and he managed only second in this race last year. That said, he is a course winner. Limato is a sprinter who now tries 7 furlongs for the first time. He was a top class two year old, but is small, and may not have much more progress left in him. DUTCH CONNECTION ran down the field in the 2,000 Guineas, an then won the Jersey Stakes (Group 3) at Royal Ascot. He was then narrowly beaten in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly. Of the front three in the betting, he seems to have the most scope for further improvement.

    3.45 Summer Stakes

A class 2 handicap over 1M 6F (14 runners). I'm going against what I said earlier here, and backing BATTERSEA. He needed the race on his seasonal debut at Haydock last time. His three year old form (two wins) was very strong.

I've just seen that Gleneagles will not now run in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, which is a pity. On Saturday TANZEEL will take a lot of beating in the Stewards' Cup if he runs, following his demolition job at York at the weekend. I believe the five day declarations are out later today, so if he's declared and still near his present 10/1 after they are made known, I'd be having an interest!

    Good Luck all!

It seems Tanzeel has been declared for Saturday at the five day stage, but is said by connections to be unlikely to run. We'll have to have another look at that race later in the week.

Meantime, I've been looking again at the opener tomorrow (2:00). As I said (and as MHTR helpfully reminded us) Mark Johnston's do well here, and I wouldn't put anyone off his runners in the first. But I've come to the view that this may be lazy thinking. I'm therefore going to be with MOUNT LOGAN (as aforesaid - been knocking on the door), COLLABORATION (comes out best at the weights here) and ELHAAME (Godolphin runner - went into one or two notebooks last time when winning at Windsor).

No worries MHTR - we obviously both realise the power of Braveheart at this meeting!

Tell you what though - it sure don't look easy!

Not done any studying since Cheltenham when Coneygree made me a lovely profit to end the meeting. Goodwood is a different kettle of fish but I'll take a stab.

    Tomorrow I fancy:

    Noble Gift e/w
    Dutch Connection
    Double Up

    Good luck.

Day 2 of the Galway Festival this evening also chaps.

There is the STRONG possibility that Dermot Weld will go home with a fistful of winners tonight. He has runners in all bar the first, with a reasonable case to be made out for all of them. Every year he farms this meeting. A few modest combination bets may prove profitable.

I've taken your advice on Weld at Galway, on 5 of his. Gone Bobby Jean in penultimate though.

Speculate to accumulate. Or blow the lot. Whatevs.

Day One very tricky. A win and two seconds from the four races I played in. And Mr Weld is not stepping up to the plate tonight either, so far!

Anyway, here's mine for Day Two:

    2.00 WILLIAM OF ORANGE/AIR SQUADRON/BOITE
Another tricky handicap, but these have the form and time performances to go close.
    2.35 HIGHLAND REEL
Comfortably has the best form on offer.
    3.10 AROD/NIGHT OF THUNDER
Solow is the likeliest winner here, but at 4/6 there are sufficient reasons to take him on. Night Of Thunder is a dual Group 1 winner, and Arod may still be progressing.
    3.45 WASHINGTON DC
May still be progressing, whereas that is a question mark about King Of Rooks.
    4.20 PROMISING RUN
The most intriguing bet of the afternoon for me. Pitched straight in here by Saeed Bin Suroor on debut - a top class American pedigree, and she holds a Group 2 entry. The highest rated of those to have run (Richard Hannon's Winter Rose) doesn't set a very high standard.

    Good Luck to all!

Had one winner (Ridge Ranger), three seconds and a fourth in the last.

Fancy Teak in the first tomorrow. Agree with Night of Thunder, need to squeeze some value somewhere.

    Good luck

    3.10 Arod
3.45 Muhadathat (Washington DC - NR btw)
    4.20 Promising Run
    4.55 Tazffin / Sonnetation
    5.25 Fiftyshadesofgrey / Ishiamber

Two wins yesterday for Ponty72 moves him to the top of the Champion Tipster leaderboard!

    2.35 SHALAA
    3.10 BIG ORANGE/QUEST FOR MORE
    3.45 HIDDEN GOLD
    4.20 NOTARY
    4.55 MARTINI TIME
    5.30 RATHAATH

    Galway Hurdle
