of that Marquee signing we used to wait for. Spoke of and not delivered, early bird must have put paid to that showing that it was indeed a stunt for ST sales.

You must have me confused with others, just a thought after reading the Wigan thread.

I think I prefer these unknown signings from the lower leagues. It's far more exciting expecting little and being surprised than expecting loads and not getting anywhere.

Winnall, Hourihane and Scowen are plenty Marquee-ish for me :)

If marquee signings mean we end up with wasters like Mido, Lita, Frimpong, Treacy and others then I'm glad we've abandoned that policy.

Does anybody actually remember a so called 'marquee' signing being fairly successful, because I can't? lol

He was crap. Decent set piece but not much else. Magically became a better player while in hospital.

My memory is nearly as bad as my fashion. All I remember is a screamer against Derby.

He was on but we paid about three times what he was worth so it wasn't really his fault he was seen as a marquee signing.

Wilkinson, Hendrie, Hignett? I don't know if they were described as 'marquee' at the time, but blimey did they deliver.

It all depends on the individual player, whether they still have the desire, or if they have the desire, do they still have the legs.

We've had plenty of successful marquee signings too. We definately need to sign a couple of well known experienced players this summer that will hopefully be more John Hendrie, Darren Moore etc than Mido, Jennings etc. As much as i'd love being proved otherwise I don't think trying to make future resaleable assets is going to get us promoted.

True and it goes to show how difficult it is for the manager although the fact we're going back nearly 20 years to name successful marquee signings is worrying. Was big Daz the last successful big name signing? And he was signed about 8 years ago.

My point was years ago we would have a got a biggish name signing and a few lesser known lights, then it became we missed out on them and didn`t get that player who would get folks talking then we went onto bringing in old lags carting three ston of dripping abart wi em.

The named player used to get folks buying season tickets now most of the coin is sitting in the bank before the previous season has faded.

This post had nothing to do with individual players, neither was it a call for a big name signing cos I`ll get what I`m given it was just my thoughts on how pre season has changed over the years re selling ST`s and signing players.
