    BAD DEFENDING
Posted on: Sat 25 Aug 2007

ARGYLE manager Ian Holloway was scathing of his side's defending after Saturday's 3-2 Coca-Cola Championship defeat at Barnsley.

The Pilgrims had to bounce back after going 3-0 down to goals from Istvan Ferenczi, Dominik Werling and Brian Howard - this after a dominant start by Ollie's men.

"The way the game started, I didn't anticipate that happening to us," said Ollie.

"For the first goal, I saw [Barnsley] play a long ball in behind my defence, where we had had no problems, and they scored. They didn't hardly have a kick before then.

"The second goal was a joke. We should have won the ball played forward to their centre-forward and not given a free-kick away. I don't expect my centre-half to be that deep.

"We gave a silly free-kick away where we needed to be stronger - their centre-halves were bullying our strikers and our centre-halves were getting bullied by their strikers.

"Football's a simple game: their centre-forwards came out on top of our defence, and we didn't quite do that the other end.

"I think Romain was at fault for the goal. The defensive wall wasn't the right side for a left-footer. [Werling] just smacked it straight and [Roman] shouldn't have been beaten from there. I don't expect my goalie to be beaten from there and I don't expect my defensive wall to be lined up that way.

"The third goal was pathetic, very weak. A little bloke, no bigger than me, won a header against a centre-half. That's just not right.

"We won the second half 2-1 and we lost the first half 2-0, and that means you are going to lose.

"But it's the way you lose.

"You have got to be on the ball at this standard. [Barnsley] beat us last year at our place, they score goals, they are a threat, and we let too many goals in.

"Let's be fair. I didn't come here expecting to win. I came here expecting a really tough game and I hoped we could win.

"We looked very exciting in the end, but I shouldn't have had to do that. My team should have competed for every single ball like a Plymouth Argyle player should.

"I didn't enjoy what I saw today. I didn't see any signs of that last Saturday - I thought we looked better than Ipswich."

    I liked

their centre-halves were bullying our strikers and our centre-halves were getting bullied by their strikers.

Can't remember that being said about a Barnsley team for a long time

Its great to hear an opposition manager saying things like that about us. Shows we are moving in the right direction.
