Barnsley vs Bristol City Barnsley Football Club 3 - 0 Bristol City Footbal Club Date: 02/10/2007 Venue: Oakwell Attendance: 9679 Referee: E Ilderton Barnsley 3-0 Bristol City Adam Baker reports from Oakwell City's unbeaten start to the Championship ended at Oakwell tonight, with goals from Brian Howard, Dennis Souza and Martin Devaney giving Barnsley a deserved 3-0 win. The visitors gave as good as they got in an even first 45, but after half-time their resolve was broken by two goals in the space of six second half minutes. Howard opened the scoring with a wonder goal and then Souza finished from close range to all but end City's run of eight games without defeat. And with City chasing the game, substitute Devaney sealed the win with a low finish across Adriano Basso. Gary Johnson will be eager to see how his charges respond to their first loss in the Championship division, with one of the promotion favourites, Sheffield United, due at Ashton Gate on Saturday. Basso was called into action as early as the third minute when Grant McCann was given the freedom of Oakwell on the edge of the box to take aim. The former Cheltenham midfielder drove the ball low to Basso's right and City's Brazilian keeper made a fine one-handed diving save. Gary Johnson started the game watching from the stands, benefiting from the higher angle of view - but after further chances for Miguel Mostto and McCann, the City boss was soon down in the dug-out barking out orders. And on ten minutes, with Johnson in his usual situ, Marvin Elliott took a pot-shot from distance, only to be denied by Heinz Muller's superb tip over. McCann continued to offer Barnsley's only real threat and 32 minutes whipped a 25-yard free kick inches past Basso's left-hand post. Further efforts followed from Mostto and Brian Howard, the latter calling for a spot-kick when his powerful drive hit Liam Fontaine close to his arm, but referee Eddie Ilderton waved away the appeals. After half-time Howard continued where he left off in the first 45, running at the City defence and cracking a ferocious effort just wide of the mark. Then a neat corner kick saw Jamal Campbell-Ryce and Lewin Nyatanga combine to set-up Howard in the box and this time his low shot hit the side-netting. Barnsley finally got in behind City's defence on the hour-mark as Campbell-Ryce's lofted pass found Mostto, who had broken the offside trap. However, the Peruvian international forward slipped as he chased the ball and with no one around for support, the chance was gone. The Tykes finally had their goal on 67 minutes when Mostto skipped by his marker and sprayed the ball wide to Howard. The home skipper ran and ran, twisting and turning before curling the ball beyond Basso inside his right-hand post. With their tails up, Barnsley continued to press and McCann just guided a header past the upright from Campbell-Ryce's floated cross. The killer goal came on 72 minutes with Basso only able to parry out Dominik Werling's free kick and Souza was on hand to stab in the rebound. City responded by throwing on Tamas Vasko and Ivan Sproule in attack, the duo replacing Fontaine and Murray. However, the damage had already been done and Barnsley's defence stood firm against some direct balls into the box. And when McIndoe's header was pumped straight back up field by Muller, Devaney compounded the misery for City with a brilliant low finish two minutes from time
