according to BBC News, first they won't give us the referendum they promised and now he won't respect the will of Ireland and the agreed premise that if any country did not ratify the treaty it could not be put in place
He won't respect the will of Ireland?! Why should the PM of Britain have to respect the will of Ireland? The premise is that the EU probably can't put the treaty in place if any member country rejects it, it does not mean that every other country should reject it though.
ordinarily of course our PM should not have to respect the will of any other country, that's the entire reason why I do not want this treaty. However, it has been established that if any nation rejects it the thing is over, so why ignore this and carry on anyway?
wouldn't put it past them changing procedures as soon as something doesn't go their way, which is what this treaty is anyway, an attempt to force through the constitution that was rejected by democratic procedures in Holland and France
Because it's the EU that won't put it through, but each country still needs to ratify or reject, then the EU can move on from there knowing who supports or doesn't. The Treaty is required because it brings in measures to integrate the countries joining with enlargement of the EU.
but surely it is possible to do that without the excessive hand-over of British sovereign power to Europe such as the EU foreign minister (not called that since the failure of the constitution but a position still exists) who would speak to other nations on behalf of the United Kingdom - what right has he to do that? Our country has a long history of foreign affairs and especially considering our affinity with the US over the EU we should be responsible for ourselves. I am not opposed to the EU, it brings many benefits but this is a step towards a European superstate. We joined a trading organistation and only if a referendum of the British people agreed for these powers to be lost would I accept it.
