Why did he have to retire now? I never understood why it was Pietersen or Thorpe. I always felt that Bell should have made may as he's currently too inexperienced to play in this series. We should just play the best team v the Aussies, which should have seen Thorpe and Pietersen both play.

Thorpe would have finished in the summer, so Bell could have had 18 months' Test cricket before facing Australia away, including tours in India and Pakistan.

You may say it's all very well saying this now, but I've thought that for weeks. And I guess Thorpe may have failed too eh? Who knows.

i agreed with the selectors for not playing him cos we all saw what happened to atherton, stewart when they announced it would be their last series, they didnt score any runs. i know your not knocking bell, but i believe he is a excellent player and this experience can only benefit him in the future.

I'm certainly not knocking Bell no, I agree he's an excellent prospect, it just seemed strange that he suddenly had a God-given right to play in the series and it was Pietersen or Thorpe... runs against Bangladesh aren't quite as hard to come by are they?!

i agree, and if thorpe hadnt announced his decision not to tour in the winter then he would definately be in the team. the only thing thats keeping a smile on my face is that our average age is under 30 while the aussies are gettin close to the end of their glittering careers and i always thought that we would win the ashes in australlia next time around anyway, lets hope when we beat them in australlia we are retaining them not winning them!
