Why? There are half marathons up and down the country every weekend all through the year. The GNR is not a particularly challenging course so why so many deaths? Can't have been the weather either. Was it last year there were 3 or 4? I can only assume it's the huge numbers of people running, perhaps it's just too crowded?
The numbers are huge - I only think this is significant in that it increases the probability of there being someone running who's not up to it, whether that's because they are unfit or that there's some underlying problem they weren't aware of.
You and I were going to run it once. With Rhys and E.I as I recall. There's at least 3, possibly 4, more deaths for the stats right there. <div style="text-align: right;"></div>
It proves the point That exercise is clearly bad for you. How many people died having a burger at the burger van near the start of the course - I'll tell you, none.
People who run as a hobby, and are interested in Personal Bests etc, always say don't expect a good time if you do the GNR. Getting past people must have added another mile onto the race for me. At one point, when the runners were squashed together by the road narrowing, I thought I would have to stop and wait for it to clear.
Unfortunately, they "expect" 1 Death per 15,000 participants I think I saw that figure mentioned somewhere this morning. Weren't there around 30,000 running yesterday?
