I think the legend Ronnie Glavin must take some beating. Certainly the best attacking midfelder seen for many a year in a reds shirt.
I Don't Remember Him........... being sold for 2.5 million like Higgy or getting us into the premiership like Redders, but Ronnie was before my time. I do remember him when he played in the Gary Fleming testamonial many moons ago and he was classy to watch for someone well overweight and who had retired long before.
RE: I Don't Remember Him........... That night, was the night that all the ponty were singing about Glavin and after loads of people invaded the pitch to touch him, Bryan Robson was nonplussed about it. He said after that when the game finished people ran on the pitch and he was expecting the usual," Can I have you autograph Robbo?" and tyhey all ran past him to an old fat bloke . He could not believe it.
By the way Dreamy GLAVIN WAS TWICE THE PLAYER THAT REDDERS OR HIGGY WERE. If we had him now he would have been worth £6 M easy. Only player that came close to him, in MY estimation , was Bobby Doyle, never know how good he could have been, but I remember him being awesome.
RE: By the way Dreamy This thread evokes some great memories. Glavin was without doubt the king, followed closely by Redders and Higgy. I had forgotten about Bobbby Doyle who was a fantastic talent but never fulfilled his potential. If Brian Howard stay beyond January he's gonna be right up there with these legends imho?
Howard in their class..... Your having a laugh. I can not comment for Glavin as I dont remember seeing him play. Howard as not got a prayer of being half the player Redfearn or Hignett were.
He might not have been sold for 2.5 million like Higgy or got us into the premiership like Redders, but he was a full Scottish International, out-scored Kenny Dalgleish when they played together at Celtic and in the first season back in the old 2nd Division he did get us into 6th place, just a couple of points from promotion in a very strong division. So for me it has to be Ronnie.
RE: By the way Dreamy Heard nothing but good about Ronnie and wish i'd had the chance to watch him play in a proper match. With living near Emley, I have watched a number of games in my time when he was manager of them. In his day it would have been near impossible to go for Higgy money and the Redders thing would have depended on the quality of players around him. Higgy wasn't here that long either, but it was a short term impact. Shame Fleming only lasted about 20 minutes of his benefit game. Robson was a little peeved as you said
wrong he's packed that in and returned to Wakefield F.C as manager for his second spell in charge.

Greatest = Redfearn May not have been as skilfull as Glavin but score an amazing amount of goals in some very poor Barnsleyteams year in year out. He led the reds through some bad times and some very good times, even when we played in the prem he got his fair share of goals against the best players in the country. Without doubt he is the clubs BEST ever midfield player.

Too Young To Remember Glavin My Dad thought he was a God though...Has to be redders for me....that 96/7 season he was the best player in that division bar none
