Alright folks, Got asked to do this for Prostate Cancer (they're the new sponsor of the Football League) - had to name Barnsley's top five best number 9s, and the worst... Be interesting to hear why I'm wrong... Although have to say Wilko only just snuck in. http://prostatecanceruk.org/get-inv...ague/best-no9s/weekly-articles/week-1/welcome Who would anyone have had in instead?
5. Paul Wilkinson (1996-97) 4. Neil Shipperley (1999-2001) 3. Trevor Aylott (1979-82 & 1986) 2. Ashley Ward (1997-98) 1. George Lillycrop (1907-13)
I'd have to go for Ward as no 1. I'd say Shipperley was a better player than Wilkinson for us but Wilkinson played for a side that achieved more. Never saw Aylott so can't really comment. I'm suprised Special Kay didn't make it into the top five!!!
I don't disagree with your choices. One pedant point to note, Prostate Cancer are the official charity of the league and not sponsor - I had to check to see if we were playing in the Prostate Cancer Championship this season.
Ooh, I like these The best that I've seen play for us:- 1) Ashley Ward; 2) Trevor Aylott; 3) Neil Shipperley; 4) Paul Wilkinson; 5) Jan Aage Fjortoft. The worst:- 1) Willie Ferry; 2) Les Harris; 3) Brian Mahoney; 4) John Manning; 3) Kevin McMahon. Special mention to luminaries I never had the pleasure of watching:- George Lillycrop, Harry Tuffnel, Ernest Hine, Tubby Ashton, Cec McCormack, Eddie McMorran, Tommy Taylor, Lol Chappel, Tony Leighton, Barrie Thomas.
My top five picked from players I've seen play. 1: Ashley Ward 2: Neil Shipperley 3: Trevor Aylott 4: Paul Wilkinson 5: Can't decide, will confirm in a bit.
Re: Ooh, I like these John Manning in your worst group??!! An all-time hero of mine. Can still picture him scoring two goals against Chesterfield in the FA Cup at a very snowy Oakwell. Think it must have been 1974 because weekday games were being played in the afternoon due to power cuts. Eric Winstanley was playing for Chesterfield that day and Manning gave him a very tough time.
