1997/98 for me, seeing some of the best players in the world playing on Oakwell week in week out and Oakwell 99% sold out every game. Never before happened.
I think i would say from that 1st game at West Brom in 1996/97 season right upto that Wembley play off final defeat to Ipswich those 4 years were a great ride!! A lot of very happy memories with a few bad ones sprinkled in.
1997/98 Premiership season However, special mention must be made for the promotion seasons of 1978/79, 1980/81 & 1996/97.
78/79 - 80/81 - 96/97 and 99/00 . The first two for their atmospheres 20,000 + for a fourth division game was amazing . 96/97 for obvious reasons and the last one for sheer entertainment value!
Dancing to that silly fecking Brazil song live in Regents Park, thrashing around like **** whilst bursting into "Just like watching Brazil" every two mins, didn't get a shag all summer, looked like l'd escaped from a mental home. Topped it off with 2 weeks in Magalluf and bumping into about 20 birds from Dodeth, all in tarn tops. Thats when a broke my duck.
I agree with everyone. Special mention for me though for the promotion from League 1, playoffs and the final were amazing. Also the 2008 FA Cup run season, beating Liverpool in their back garden then Oakwell being almost sold out and beating Chelsea and that unbelievable atmosphere, and the semi at Wembley are something I'll never forget.
Re: 1997/98 Premiership season / Got to agree with that, 78/79 was really special though, it was really the first time many of us had experienced any real success (and crowds) and the atmosphere was very special
Re: 1997/98 Premiership season Greatest Season must be the 96-97 seasdonwith 97-98 just behind Loved the 78-79 season , the crowds we had at some of those matches was unreal for the 4tyh division. Must just add the 68-69 season- just because it was the first one I didnt miss a home game, ***** football those mostly!!!
Re: 1997/98 Premiership season also got to agree with biglil,1997-1998 was phenominal, a real one off preceded by a fantastic promotion season. the 78-79 season was also very special with the atmosphere even in the brewery stand (east stand ) with what the bbc itv dubbed the oakwell roar. had some fantastic seasons at oakwell tbh thats why i don't despair so much when the bad times come as it makes the good times even more special and by gum we've had some special times maybe not the european games as manure or liverpool but special non the less. god forbid could've been a shrewsbury fan or summat.
The 1978/79 season Transformed our club, thanks to Allan Clarke. I used to love the away games especially. We'd turn up in our thousands on a regular basis and totally take over a ground. After all those years of just a few dozen going away, it somehow made it extra special.
Re: The 1978/79 season think grimsby used to be my favourite away game at that time spending most of the day in cleethorpes. used to walk on the prom and heard a couple hundred reds fans and felt as though we'd taken over the place, then in 78-79 cleethorpes transformed into barnsley by the sea not a lincolnshire accent to be heard.
Re: The 1978/79 season too right, my mate had a boat there and we used to go sea fishing and fighting the boat past spurn point at 5oclock am in january and february was a real experience as, you can imagine especially when we'd been on't pop most at night.
Re: The 1978/79 season 2012/13 season, where we go unbeaten, amass a record haul of points, scoring 150 goals (of which Dagnall gets 50 of them), beating the deedars and dirties home and away, flogging Wiseman for £5m in January, averaging gates of 20,000 thanks to The Don dropping the price to £20, and regaining our Premier League status. All in our 125th season as a club. Oh, and every time Mido scores he pulls out a pie/kebab/burger out of his shorts and munches it in front of the opposing fans. Hillcroft then have a statue of them erected, before leaving us for the vacant Man City job. And The Don appoints Sir Bobby Hassell.
