Good win over play off rivals Colchester last night for them. Hopefully they can get promoted would be a good away day and also bring a good following to Oakwell.
Agree with that. Danny Rose their captain. Grimsby, Donny and Bradford would be good additions for us locally.
They would but I would take Donny out of it as I have the same ‘fondness’ for them as many of our fan base have for Sheff Weds. Got absolutely sick of the crap such as ‘sleeping giants’ from their fans and their Chairman at the time, when in Truth, they struggled to get 10,000 home fans for the big games
It's hardly the same as Wednesday though really. It was just a tactic employed by John Ryan to unite a fan base. It worked for a time, they were in the Championship for a few years on sub 10k attendances and a low end league 1 budget. The meltdown their fans had when we signed Ross Turnbull who turned a contract extension with them down, and were linked with James Coppinger in the same week was fantastic though.
Never liked them to be honest. Although I can understand our fans wanting to visit there, instead of teams/places like Colchester.
Ideally Wimbledon &/or Colchester would be good for me as they’re new grounds, but I’d like to play Grimsby again. It would sell out very quickly as a lot of our younger fans won’t have been. Doesn’t look to have changed much either.
Not played them in the league for over 20 years which surprised me. Last game was the infamous 6-1 defeat when Isiah Rankin scored a hat trick against us while on loan. Mixed memories of Blundell Park, more bad than good to be honest. Remember John Hendrie getting a hat trick in a 3-2 win there in the Prem promotion season but on the flip side remember that great side in 81-82 being 2-0 up at half time before losing 3-2.
I forgot to mention this match Fitz, on the season '94-5 thread. Were you there at Grimsby that season, I think it on Easter Monday ?. It was such a disappointing defeat for us, which put a big dent in our then Play off hopes.
I used to have cousins in Cleethorpes. One of them was a Grimsby fan when he was a kid. Dunno if he ever went to games, but he used to sing “Hello, hello, Grimsby Aggro!” a lot, until he defected to Man United.
Was it 1-0? I probably was, because I wouldn’t have missed a local game back then, but I can’t remember the game at all. I’ve been there a lot over the years and stood/sat at both ends of the ground. First time I went was August 84, and there were very few reds fans there for the first game of the season. We had a few seats and a corner terrace and lost 1-0. Another time was a 1-0 win that may have been our first win of the season and I missed our goal going for a pee. Not many reds there then either. Come to think of it, it’s little wonder we loved an away win in the 80s. They were so rare lol
It helps when its part of a successful season of course. As Mick mentioned there, my favourite game/result there was the 2-3 John Hendrie hat trick win. They had a man sent off for what was admittedly a very weak looking 'headbutt'. But they still got back to 2-2 and I thought ohh no, surely not!. But Hendrie though, who was getting boo'ed by their lot every time he touched the ball, popped up with the neat back-flick winner, in front of our fans. Yeahhh, super Johnnie!.
Yep, I deffo remember that one. Appleby got injured, had his head bandaged and played like a man possessed. My mate went in the home end with his Grimsby supporting neighbour a few times in the late 70s early 80s when Clarke & Hunter were in charge. He said they were good games with both having strong teams and the reds fans were a great sight packed in behind the goal.
Great player for us Matty Appleby. Too short to be any good in the air but pace to burn and read the game superbly. Brilliant in a sweeper role.
And seeing as we're talking about good memories against Grimsby, although this was actually before my time as a fan!. This is at the end of season '78-9, when we beat them to win promotion from Division Four (which is now League Two of course). Alan Clarke's first season as the player manager, so how much did the club spend on appointing him that season. A bit of ambition ehh lol, in appointing a manager!!.
