One of Yorkshire's finest... Bill Nelson. Still active at 74. My musical hero since the 70s.

Here he is 11 years ago...

I honestly can't pin down a favourite. Seen quite a few big names and not so much big names (The latest Lead with Maneskin impressed me). So I'll go for a club guitarist as there is so much talent out there. A local rock band Top gun, lead guitarist Jack. Ex guns and oatcakes. Played alongside another favourite Steve Johnson (sadly passed) . Who in turn Played alongside Phil lynott.
The video may not do justice. But the guy and the band are well worth seeing (on the local cct often). We've hired em 3/4 times in the last 15 yrs or so. For our presentation do's. Fantastic band imo.

Paul. You asked about what I’ve done. This is shabby production & my guitars sound crap. But if you listened to the Only Ones tune, you can hear how much I stole from John Perry. I’m not embarrassed about that.. :)

If I had to pick one who had the most influence on me I'd probably go for David Pajo. Changed the way I looked at playing guitar. Not a widdly player, just love his sonics.

By the way, that’s my dear friend Steve Hands on drums. Filling in for Kellie who sadly died a couple of years ago.
Steve plays drums on my solo stuff. Which we are thinking about finally putting out. I’ll do that alone. Heavenly have been asking what I’m up to? But they didn’t want me 15 years ago, even on Nick Caves recommendation, so fck em. :)

My favourite guitarists are David Gilmour, Gary Moore and Clarence White, but the best I’ve seen live, and I’ve seen him many, many times with you Mr. C, is the current Pretenders guitarist James Walbourne.

The most memorable performance from him, and I’ve seen him play with several different bands/singers, was when he played with Peter Bruntnell at the Borderline in London. Even Bruntnell realised he was being upstaged. Walbourne isn’t flashy, like most of the (usually rawk) guitarists that fill the top 10 lists, cos they can play 58 notes per second (even though it sounds awful and doesn’t serve the song), but what he does is play the right guitar part for the song, every single time, whether it’s an acoustic duo, a country standard or a new wave classic. Chrissie Hynde calls him the last of the guitar heroes.

His in-laws are Richard and Linda Thompson, and he’s played with Pernice Brothers, the Handsome Family, Bap Kennedy, Son Volt, the Pogues and in Ray Davies’ band. And for the past few years he’s been in The Pretenders.

But his best critical acclaim is that he’s the only guitarist I’ve ever heard Mr. C concede is better than himself. High praise indeed!

Paul, that Sunday afternoon, when me & Kusworth played in Camden town & then we nipped up to Highgate to watch James play at the Boogaloo? You saw 3 decent guitar players that day. In reverse order of quality.. Me, Darrell & James.. :)
