https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/18571090/footballer-come-out-first-openly-gay-male/ Football is finally progressing enough that a current player feels he can come out. Whoever it is I hope is treated with respect especially by opposition fans. Glad his club are supportive of him wanting to tell everyone.
Brilliant that a player finally feels comfortable to do this but, in reality, It’s 2022 and we’re in the UK - this shouldn’t even need to be a story.
Probably being forced to by that disgrace of a newspaper. Come out exclusively in the sun or we'll out you anyway. Not the first time they've done that
Aye, they've been dying to pull the trigger on this one for years. As stated above, it's sad that in this day and age, this is still classed as newsworthy.
Hasn't this all happened before, rumours of a top player coming out a year or so ago? And nothing happened so I doubt football is really progressing, more like the Sun wanting to get more readers with titillating gossip!
You have to ask how does that rag know and know enough to run a teaser story If I was the player in question I wouldn’t be giving the heads up to the Scum and giving them a weeks notice It should be a none story but clearly that rag thinks it’s headline news. As I suspect do it’s knuckle dragging “readers” Sadly I also expect said player will have to put up with some pretty offensive “banter” from a significant minority of fans Bet the championship club isn’t Millwall though
Prediction time. The first openly gay 'high profile' footballer either international or top premier club player will absolutely coin it in... So will the club. I know it's not about that but it'll be a bi-product of the revelation. The worldwide shirt sales, media, sponsorship etc will be phenomenal. Whoever it is I hope they do it of their own free will and don't get forced or others make the decision. Couple of my very good mates are gay. One you'd never guess and the other couldn't convince you he was straight. In fact I shared a room with the latter on WBA overnighter last week. We were on about the financial fall out of coming out and he agreed the 'pink pound' will be spent in abundance.
Was it not after he had retired? As ever its the press who are building it up when there's no need to.
come on ST, I know its the Sun, but there is nothing sensationalist in that story, have you thought maybe this guy just wants to do his bit for the gay cause? Like show other maybe more nervous people that you can have a football career and be openly gay and that most of the the Neanderthal's in football have caught up with the rest of this century.
I don't think the vast majority will care. All you want from someone who plays for your team is for them to give 100% effort so sexuality won't come in to it for most Football fans. I would expect rather than opposition fans saying stuff about him it's more likely his own fans will create him a song in support that will come across as wrong.
I may be in the minority but I'm sure I'm not. I've a large circle of make friends and I'm positive not one would give a sh17e. There'll always be a very small minority who would but that could be the same for been Jewish, black, lesbian, Catholic or even mixed race.
Never guess? It’s a bit of an old school thought to suggest it should be obvious to all that someone’s gay. You’re probably mistaking gay with camp - they aren’t the same thing. Also, what point are you trying to make about a sharing a room with a gay man? Do you think mutual attraction, consent, and respect doesn’t apply to gay men, or are you really just that irresistible? I’m sorry to call you out, but this is a great example of being offensive when your intention was to do the complete opposite.
What I've never understood is that some of those who practice and preach religion. Love thy neighbour etc. Are some of the biggest bigots. On several issues.
I've a feeling that his fellow footballers would probably have an idea he was homosexual, so I agree, I really don't see an issue there. I just think the Sun is sensationalising still!
This is a big step for football, but you can just see what is going to happen. The initial admiration will die down, then every mistake he makes on the pitch will be followed by homophobic abuse. Then because of the celebrity his coming out will earn him, the papers will be hell-bent on destroying him by trying to dig up the details of his past and private life. Any other young gay player will think twice about putting themselves though it...
