I was in a pub in Wakefield, and whilst stood at the bar, heard two blokes on about Barnsley chances this season. "Massive firesale there. No chance. No players left and I know Barnsley because I work in the area". I couldn’t be bothered correcting him, but it did make me chuckle.
I dont think they were being precise with language. Of course in 3 years time Chesterfield have a chance that they could be playing in the Champions League its just a slim chance...
Were they being precise when they said we had no players left, because looking at the squad, it appears a lot healthier than it did at the end of last season. If I had have got involved in the conversation, I would have said that the squad Wilson had put together was one of the freshest and hungriest looking for quite some time, and without bias I feel pleasantly optimistic about the coming campaign. I can see us comfortably attaining a top 10 place, with an eye on the top 6 and hopefully playing some nice football along the way.
I'd say it's fair to say we have completely dismantled our squad which is good as by and large we weren't good enough. It's also fair to say within that we have been forced into getting shut of most of our better high earning players and that is what people see. We look 3/4 players away from being the finished article and start the season without a specialist right back. The rebuilding has started but is far from finished. A top half finish with the team as it stands today would be an excellent achievement. We have assembled a team that has lots of potential but little experience at this or any level. We have not won a single pre season game with the team building being left late.and the team taking time to gel. We look very light up front but again this can be remedied. It's difficult to see this season as anything other than a starting point a building block for the future but at the same time it's more exciting as a fan to be supporting a team that's full of young, determined played rather than full of loans and journeymen. I have faith in Danny and think we will play vibrant attack minded football rather than the four fare that's been served up for too long. From the outside looking in however I can see that people might see us as a team in crisis.
