FORMER Barnsley transfer target Leon Constantine has blamed a section of Port Vale's supporters for his decision to quit the League One club at the end of the season.

Constantine said: "I'd be lying if I said the abuse hadn't influenced my decision. I have put in a lot of work here. I am a team player and have defended and cleared numerous headers and tracked back.

"Obviously someone out there thinks I am doing a lot more than other people here think, so I will just go where I am wanted. I have never been at a club where I have scored goals and heard the crowd boo, so I am leaving them in the past.

"I don't know whether it is a minority or the majority of fans, but if it was a minority you wouldn't hear it. But I am a tough person".

RE: SIGNED FOR THE BARNSLEY! YOU SHOULD'VE SIGNED FOR THE BARNSLEY! nt

Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt has revealed that he has dismissed ridiculous offers for striker Leon Constantine who was on the verge of signing for Barnsley earlier this month.

Vale accepted a bid of £125,000 from the Championship strugglers for their top scorer only for Constantine to turn down the move.

"We'd need a replacement so, if someone offered us £50,000 to £100,000 there'd be no point unless we could get a player in," Bratt told the Stoke Sentinel. "We might as well keep him until the end of the season.

"Football isn't a game where anyone does you favours. If they can pinch your best players for next to nothing, then clubs will try that.

"People do try it on and I don't blame them. If we could get people in for nothing we would - that's just the way it is in football.

"We've had phone calls offering silly money for a couple of our players, but we can't give our players away.

"We need Leon to try to get us up this season."

that's one way of putting it I suppose

Port Vale striker Leon Constantine has targeted a summer move to the Championship after turning down a January switch to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 28-year-old missed out on a move to Barnsley several weeks ago and was less than keen to move to Brighton, despite the two clubs involved agreeing a £135,000 deal.

Seagulls chairman Dick Knight told The Argus: "I made an offer to Port Vale, which they accepted, of £135,000 plus £15,000 if we got promoted and he scored 12 goals.

"I also agreed all the terms with his agent, but the player wants to play in the Championship.

"This is his moment as far as he is concerned. He thinks he has got to go to a Championship club at the start of next season."

They accepted a cash only offer ? But I thought they were demanding a replacement as well ? ie Marc Richards. Oh well.

    wrong decision Leon?

This evening it was revealed that the sale of Leon Constantine to Barnsley for £125k plus Barnsley striker Marc Richards was off.

Vale boss Martin Foyle is saying the deal broke down at the Barnsley end due to personal terms offered to Leon, the Barnsley Chairman is saying that Leon's terms were all agreed, the problem existed with Vale's offer to Marc Richards.

Well, whatever the problem was the fact is we still have Leon Constantine.

The question now is what do we do with him? He clearly wants to be playing Championship football, but - unfortunately for him - he's still with us playing Div.1 football.

Leon may have had some reservations joining Barnsley. They're struggling in the Championship and may well find themselves back in Div.1 next season. Why would Constantine sign up to 18 months/2 years with a side who may be relegated in the summer?

His current situation with Vale is that his contract will end in the summer, and then he will be able to move wherever he pleased on a free. It would make sense for him to see the season out with Vale, bang in a few more goals, attract some more interest, then pick a championship club for the new season.
