TWO defensive lapses let BirminghamCity take a half time lead against the Reds at a sun-drenched Oakwell.</p>

Birmingham almost got lucky inside the first 30 seconds as the ball fell nicely for Nick Wright in the area but Kyle Letheren was able to claw his well-struck shot away to safety.</p>

Seconds later the Blues were in front as the Reds failed to deal with Patrick Kavanagh's corner. The ball dropped invitingly for Matthew Birley on the edge of the area and the midfielder smashed his shot off a defender and past Letheren.</p>

Barnsley were level inside two minutes as Ritchie Jones' corner caused chaos in the Birmingham defence. The ball eventually fell for Marc Richards, who rifled it home from six yards.</p>

Birmingham's youngsters responded well with Kavanagh finding space down the right wing on nine minutes. The winger did well to keep control of the ball and find Wright in the centre and the big striker gave Letheren no chance from 12 yards out.</p>

The Reds should have been back in the game on 16 minutes as Scott McGrory's exquisite pass found Daniel Nardiello in space at the far post. The striker did everything right by lifting the ball over a defender but lashed his shot high over the bar with only Adam Legzdins to beat.</p>

Wright was an inch away from his second on 34 minutes as he outpaced the Barnsley defence to reach Darren Campion's through ball but dragged his low shot a whisker wide of the post. The striker went even closer two minutes later as he sent a free kick over the Barnsley wall and against the cross bar after being upended by Robert Atkinson.</p>
