MARTIN Devaney's goal just after the half hour was the difference between the sides at half time after a pulsating and wonderfully entertaining opening period at Oakwell.</p>

Reds caretaker manager Simon Davey made three changes to the side that lost at QPR with injury and illness robbing him of Brian Howard and Paul Reid while Leon Knight was dropped. In came Kyel Reid, Devaney and Rob Atkinson, who made his full debut for the Club.</p>

Barnsley started quickly with Paul Hayes' pass almost sending Daniel Nardiello clean through on three minutes but Stephen Foster did well to guide the ball back to Brian Jensen.</p>

Again the Reds pushed on two minutes later as the ball fell nicely for Grant McCann on the edge of the area and the midfielder sent his shot past Jensen but agonisingly inches over the bar.</p>

At the other end Chris McCann brought a fine save from Nick Colgan on seven minutes after sending a volley towards goal after Atkinson's clearing header had dropped invitingly 25 yards out.</p>

Nardiello then managed to get in behind Michael Duff on nine minutes as he raced onto Grant McCann's flick and brought the very best from Jensen with a well-struck shot.</p>

Jensen had to be on top form again just a minute later as he somehow got down to turn Hayes' goalbound header away after the striker had risen highest to meet Devaney's excellent cross. From the resulting corner Atkinson flashed an effort high over the bar.</p>

Burnley almost stole the lead on 14 minutes as the Reds defence made a complete mess of Wayne Thomas' free kick but thankfully a combination of Antony Kay and Atkinson managed to smother the danger. Kyle Lafferty was unlucky a minute later as his shot from Wade Elliott's pull back looked to be aiming for the top corner but Sam Togwell managed to get his head onto the ball and divert it away to safety.</p>

Lafferty again got in on 17 minutes as he raced onto Gifton Noel Williams' pass before bringing the best from Colgan with a low shot.</p>

Togwell then thought he had broken the deadlock on 20 minutes as he took on Kay's quick free kick before hammering a wonderful shot against the bar from fully 30 yards. The ball bounced away from danger.</p>

Again Devaney caused problems with a deep cross on 22 minutes which gave Kyel Reid the chance to attack the ball at the back post but the young winger could only divert it wide of goal.</p>

Togwell was the further Reds player forward again on 23 minutes as he combined well with Hayes before racing in on the Burnley defence but this time his shot flew high over the bar. At the other end Lafferty lashed a wild shot high over the top a minute later.</p>

Nardiello got his first real sight of goal on 25 minutes as he raced clean through only Devaney's pass and went one-on-one with Jensen but the big Burnley keeper came out on top by making a fine low save.</p>

The opening goal finally came on 31 minutes when Nardiello showed great skill and composure to slot a fine pas through the heart of the Burnley defence and Devaney raced clear to score with a fine low finish.</p>

Burnley almost grabbed a leveller just seconds later as Elliott's corner dropped dangerously in the area for Stephen Foster but the Reds managed to scramble it clear.</p>

Barnsley played with a renewed vigour after the goal and the Reds growing confidence shone through Hayes on 35 minutes as he raced onto Nardiello's pass before shooting inches over the bar.</p>

Nardiello then turned wonderfully well onto Hayes' pass two minutes later and broke free in the area but his low shot fizzed across the face of goal with Jensen stranded.</p>

Another golden chance went begging on 43 minutes and again it fell to Nardiello as he raced clear of the Burnley defence once more but lashed his shot past Jensen's outstretched arm and wide of the upright.</p>
